SOUTHSEA MAN SENTENCED FOR STRANGLING GIRLFRIEND DURING VIOLENT ATTACK
A man named Mario Oliveira, of Edmund Road, Southsea, has been convicted of strangling his girlfriend during a violent attack inside her home in Botley.
The incident occurred after Oliveira took her phone and accused her of cheating with a colleague.
The court heard that Oliveira left his victim struggling to breathe and grabbed her neck with one hand in a violent assault that lasted about 45 minutes.
During the attack, the woman managed to break free and hit Oliveira with a knife's handle.
Falling to the floor, she hit her head before being pulled upstairs.
Oliveira then threatened to kill himself and the person he claimed she was cheating with, before leaving the scene.
Oliveira has previously pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The judge sentenced him to ten months in jail, suspended for 18 months, and ordered him to complete ten rehabilitation activity days and 180 hours of unpaid work.
The judge remarked on the emotional damage caused to the victim, stating that it would take a very long time for her to recover.
