December 2022 Paedophile continued to collect indecent images after arrest Police specialists stopped categorising the 82,000 images found on already convicted paedophile Marian Burlan’s computer and hard drives after they hit more than 3,000 child sex abuse images and videos. The 59-year-old Romanian had amassed the collection of 3,221 categorised files between late 2020, when he was first arrested by the police, and his second arrest in February 2022. On Tuesday, Oxford Crown Court heard that although Burlan did not share his vile collection with other sex offenders, he had saved files to internet-based cloud storage for safe keeping. Christopher Pembridge, prosecuting, said police went to Burlan’s bedsit on February 23 this year. He was not in, having been admitted to hospital the previous month following a heart attack. But detectives were let in by the man’s landlords, who lived next door. They seized a number of digital devices from the flat, seven of which were found to contain indecent images and films of children. In total, he was found to have 1,236 images and videos in the worst category, including depictions of child rape. There were a further 1,985 in categories B and C. However, Mr Pembridge said there were more than 82,000 images uncovered by the police that were uncategorised – 30,000 more than were found when his computers were seized in 2020. “The categorisers stopped and there is no way of saying whether or not those images were indecent or not, but that is contextual information,” Mr Pembridge said this week. The children in the categorised images were as young as one, although most of the youngsters were estimated to be aged between six and eight. Software had also been installed on Burlan’s computer designed to mask his internet use and delete files. Burlan, previously of Main Road, Long Hanborough, but now at HMP Bullingdon, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court earlier this month to possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images showing bestiality Burlan is currently in custody, having admitted breaching a sexual harm prevention order in August by having a mobile phone he had not registered with the police. Jailing him for two years on Tuesday, Judge Maria Lamb said: “There are aggravating features here. These were very young children, moving as well as still images and there were items [on your computer] to conceal the material that you had downloaded.” The sentence will run alongside the jail time he is currently serving. Burlan remains subject to a 10 year sexual harm prevention order. But prosecutor Robert Lindsey questioned whether the case could go ahead, as no Romanian interpreter had been booked. He also apologised for the ‘state’ of the prosecution papers, which had only been uploaded to the digital system an hour before the hearing. Judge Michael Gledhill KC, battling court WiFi woes, replied: “As I’ve got no access to the internet at the moment, I don’t think you need apologise.” He remanded Burlan in custody until September 23, telling the defendant: “In the circumstances, regrettable as it is, I adjourn the sentence.” Burlan, who appeared in the dock wearing a grey tracksuit and carrying what appeared to be a black leather-bound bible, spoke only to confirm his name. When the Romanian national was sentenced earlier this summer, Judge Maria Lamb told him: “The author of this pre-sentence report says that the exploitation and abuse of children undertaken to gratify individuals – individuals like you – who are often able to detach themselves from ownership of the criminal actions that are directly carried out against those children is a deeply destructive and utterly callous process. “I agree wholeheartedly with what the probation officer says about that.   “In fairness to you, it does appear from what was said to the probation officer during the course of your interview with him that you have a realisation of the gravity of your offending.”  June 2022 Paedophile caught with stash of almost 50,000 indecent images of kids A paedophile’s vast stash of almost 50,000 indecent images was discovered when he returned his laptop to a shop but still avoided a prison sentence. In total, he had around 1,100 images and videos in the very worst category, including one that showed the sexual assault and rape of a child estimated to be three to five years old. There were 46,000 images and videos in category C and 588 in category B. Ms Aubrey-Fletcher said some of the children were in obvious distress. The youngest children in the images were thought to be aged between two and four. A further 33,832 image and video files were found on the devices but not categorised by the specialist officers. Interviewed by the police, Burlan admitted what he had done and said he had looked at sexually-explicit images of adults, children and animals. Sentencing him at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, Judge Maria Lamb said: “The author of this pre-sentence report says that the exploitation and abuse of children undertaken to gratify individuals – individuals like you – who are often able to detach themselves from ownership of the criminal actions that are directly carried out against those children is a deeply destructive and utterly callous process. Judge Lamb sentenced him to 16 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years with a requirement he complete up to 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He must abide by a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and sign on as a sex offender for a decade. The judge ordered he pay £425 in costs. Even Burlan was shocked that he waked free, as he had prepared to go to prison by packing a suitcase he brought with him to court.
