In a disturbing case that unfolded in Sunderland, police officers uncovered a troubling collection of indecent images and extreme pornography on the device of local resident Marc Mallaby. The incident came to light in March 2021 when authorities responded to reports involving the possession and viewing of illicit material involving minors.
Initially, law enforcement officers visited Mallaby's residence in Sunderland with the purpose of conducting a search for evidence related to child abuse images.
However, at the time of their arrival, Mallaby was not present at his home on Cricklewood Road, Hylton Castle.
It was only later that he voluntarily presented himself at a police station to address the allegations against him.
During the police interview, Mallaby was confronted with the evidence, which included a mobile phone containing a gallery of indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Jessica Slaughter explained to Newcastle Crown Court that Mallaby acknowledged the reasons for the police inquiry and handed over the device, which was open to a gallery displaying such illicit material.
The court was informed that the police had seized the phone and conducted a thorough examination.
The investigation revealed a disturbing collection of images and videos stored on Mallaby’s mobile device.
Specifically, there were 17 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency, along with 148 videos.
Additionally, there were 30 Category B images and 20 videos, as well as 348 Category C images and 16 videos.
Among these were particularly heinous items, including an extreme pornography image and two videos depicting women engaging in sexual acts with a dog.
The children depicted in the images were estimated to be between the ages of seven and ten years old.
Further searches uncovered an additional 43 indecent images stored on a computer tower linked to Mallaby.
Police also examined search histories for terms commonly associated with seeking such illicit material and found over 6,000 hits, indicating a significant interest in child exploitation content.
During police interviews, Mallaby admitted that he was not attracted to adults and expressed that his attraction to children had made it difficult for him to lead a normal life.
His actions and possession of such material were deemed serious violations of the law.
In court, Mallaby, who resides on Cricklewood Road in Sunderland, pleaded guilty to charges of making indecent images of children between 2015 and 2019, as well as possessing extreme pornography.
His sentencing resulted in a 10-month prison term, which was suspended for 18 months.
