MARC JOHN FROM HAVERFORDWEST SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG TYSON

Marc John, a resident of Market Street in Haverfordwest, was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog named Tyson during a period spanning from November 6 to December 18, 2018. The case drew significant attention due to the severity of Tyson's condition and the circumstances surrounding his neglect.

According to evidence presented by RSPCA prosecutor Nick Devonald, Tyson was found to be in a dire state when examined by a veterinarian. The dog was described as 'extremely thin,' with a body condition score of only one out of five, indicating severe emaciation. Additionally, Tyson had a large, infected, ulcerated tumour on his cheek, which had been left untreated for weeks. The veterinarian's assessment suggested that Tyson's condition had deteriorated over a period of approximately six to eight weeks, ultimately leading to his euthanasia due to the extent of his suffering.

Mr. Devonald highlighted the visible signs of neglect, stating, “The dog was clearly emaciated with an obvious swelling to its cheek and hair-loss near his tail.” The court was shown photographs of Tyson’s injuries, emphasizing the prolonged neglect that had taken place.

During police interviews, Marc John claimed that Tyson was the pet of his former partner and that he had not been present when he returned to collect his belongings. John stated that he had fed Tyson, noting that the dog’s condition would temporarily improve but then decline again. He also mentioned that he had wormed the dog and provided a flea collar, suggesting some level of care. However, the court was informed that Tyson had been under John’s care for approximately five years before he was found wandering on a road in Haverfordwest and subsequently taken to a veterinarian.

Prosecutor Devonald pointed out that the neglect appeared to be ongoing, as he presented magistrates with photographs of Tyson’s injuries. The case also revealed that Tyson’s suffering was prolonged and severe.

In defense, Mike Kelleher explained that following a breakup, John and his ex-partner needed to vacate their shared home quickly. When John returned to collect his belongings, Tyson was not with him. Kelleher stated, “For the dog’s last days he did not have control of it and fully believed that his ex-partner had taken him and was looking after him in the normal way.” He further added that if the breakup had not occurred, John would have ensured Tyson received veterinary care and proper attention. Additionally, it was revealed that John had signed over ownership of a second dog to someone living at the same property.

Ultimately, the court sentenced Marc John to 12 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work, pay costs amounting to £715, and a surcharge. Furthermore, John received a five-year ban from keeping animals, which will expire in July 2024. The case underscores the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting the needs of domestic pets, especially in cases where prolonged suffering is evident.
