OFFENDER JAILED FOR CONTROLLING AND ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS WIFE
A husband who exerted control over his wife by cutting decorations from their Christmas tree with a knife and injuring her finger has been sentenced for a series of abusive acts.Lukmal Khalil, a 37-year-old Kuwaiti Kurdish man formerly residing on Halcyon Road in Oxton, tearfully appeared in court as he received a 21-month prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court.
The judge condemned his behavior as vile and humiliating, highlighting that Khalil subjected his wife—mother to their three children—to degrading treatment, including inspecting her to verify whether she had been unfaithful.
The court was told that Khalil's actions grew progressively more sinister, with violence occurring often in front of their children, such as smashing crockery, using offensive language, and on Christmas, carelessly trimming the Christmas tree with a knife, which resulted in a cut to his wife’s arm.
On another occasion, he broke her small finger during an assault.
Khalil also sought to control his wife’s social life, limiting her access to her phone and social media and forcing her to send him photographs.
The police intervened on July 19 after he woke his wife by throwing water at her and accused her of infidelity.
Khalil was remanded into custody and attempted to persuade his wife to retract her statement using prison phones.
He was also issued a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.
While the court recognized his difficult upbringing and recent personal losses, it emphasized the damaging effect of his actions on his wife and children.
