CONTROLLING BOYFRIEND BANNED EX FROM APPLYING FOR JOBS SAYING 'EVERY MAN WOULD BE LOOKING' AT HER
An abusive partner made his girlfriend's life a misery in a campaign of controlling behaviour.Luke Grainger forced his partner to give up her job and left her dependent on him for money.
She had to ask for everything she needed, including sanitary products.
When Grainger's girlfriend saw job adverts and asked him if she could apply, he told her no, "because every man would be looking at you".
The jealous 40-year-old sent messages to his partner's boss, before she had to quit her job, Teesside Crown Court heard.
The Middlesbrough court heard that Grainger was initially "charming" to his partner, but began accusing her "of sleeping with other men".
Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, read out a statement from the victim, that listed the abuse Grainger had subjected her to.
The court heard that Grainger had threatened to kill his victim and "burn her mother's house down".
The woman said Grainger slapped her around her face and deleted all of her contacts on her phone, so she became isolated.
He wouldn't allow her to go to the doctor's or to the shops without him.
"He said if I was to go anywhere, he'd put a screwdriver in my back," the statement read, "before I left, he punched me in the face.
I had been planning to run away in the night.
I grabbed my car keys and sped down the road.
I rang my mum's landline from a payphone and she put money in my bank account so I could get petrol and leave." The woman said that she had been "financially stable" before her relationship with Grainger, but that she had been left in debt and had to pawn a necklace to keep her car on the road, the court heard.
The woman said: "He punched the windscreen and smashed it because I was talking to my mum on the phone," she added.
