LISA CARNELL FROM TONYPANDY SENTENCED AFTER VICIOUS DOG ATTACK ON CHILD
Lisa Carnell, a resident of Church Street, Llwynypia, Tonypandy CF40 2ND, was found guilty in connection with a severe dog attack that left a young boy with life-altering injuries.The incident occurred in June 2023 and involved Carnell's dog, a Staffy, which had previously exhibited aggressive behavior.
According to court records, Carnell failed to maintain proper control over her dog, which then attacked a seven-year-old boy, causing extensive injuries to his face, neck, and hand.
The young victim, who had just returned home from a karate class with his mother, was later invited to play at a friend’s house when the attack happened.
The assault resulted in the boy losing two teeth and requiring multiple surgeries, including facial reconstruction under general anaesthetic.
Despite ongoing medical treatment, the injuries remain visibly noticeable, serving as a stark reminder of the severity of the attack.
The dog involved in the attack was owned by Carnell, who admitted to owning an out-of-control animal.
During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Carnell had failed to recognize the risks posed by her dog, despite knowing that the animal had previously attacked other dogs and had even harmed her in the past.
The court heard that in June 2022, the same dog had attacked another dog, which resulted in Carnell incurring significant veterinary expenses.
Prosecutor Sarah Coles detailed the incident, emphasizing the brutal nature of the attack and the injuries sustained by the young boy.
The court was told that the attack was so vicious that the dog had to be destroyed on June 19, 2023, just days after the incident.
Judge Stephen Harmes described the attack as “vicious” and expressed concern over the repeated incidents involving the dog.
During the proceedings, Carnell’s legal representative, Ian Birch, conveyed her remorse and regret over the incident.
The judge acknowledged her remorse but also pointed out that Carnell had been aware of the risks associated with her dog.
Addressing Carnell directly, Judge Harmes stated that her actions were a serious offense and highlighted the importance of responsibility, especially in protecting children.
He urged her to consider how she would feel if the roles were reversed and her own child had been attacked.
As part of her sentence, Carnell received a three-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for two years.
She was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, pay costs amounting to £2,400, and was disqualified from owning a dog for four years, with the ban set to expire in October 2028.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such cases are treated, emphasizing the need for responsible pet ownership and the protection of the community from dangerous animals.
