LIONEL WOOD AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE IN WORCESTERSHIRE AND BANBURY

A woman who endured severe and disturbing abuse as a child has courageously shared her story, describing the trauma she experienced as leaving a permanent mark on her psyche, akin to a visible tattoo that everyone can see.

Her harrowing account emerged in court on Monday, August 14, during the trial of Lionel Wood, an 80-year-old man from Worcestershire, who faced justice for his years of cruelty that took place over four decades ago in Banbury.

The court proceedings in Oxford Crown Court revealed that Wood systematically molested the young girl, with the abuse becoming increasingly invasive and severe over time.

Jurors heard evidence that included acts of sexual assault that, under contemporary legal standards, would be classified as oral rape of a child.

The jury quickly reached a verdict, convicting Wood of four counts of indecent assault in less than an hour and fifteen minutes.

During the trial, the victim's impact statement was read aloud by prosecutor Brian Reece.

In her emotional testimony, she reflected on her earliest memories, which were dominated by her being physically and sexually violated by a man she should have been able to trust.

She described the lasting psychological scars, comparing the trauma to an indelible tattoo—something that cannot be hidden or erased, a mark that continues to influence her life.

She recounted her ongoing struggles with her mental and physical health, including chronic health issues, dangerous substance abuse, depression, and persistent suicidal thoughts.

The victim also revealed how she suffered through a succession of unhealthy and abusive relationships.

Her words painted a picture of profound humiliation, fear, and a sense of possession, as she was manipulated and controlled by the defendant.

The abuse took place during moments when she was alone with Wood, who preyed on the trust placed in him.

His actions included the heinous act of oral rape of the child—a crime he was accused of and convicted for.

The woman detailed a brutal pattern of physical abuse inflicted by Wood, although it is noted that no criminal charges were brought against him for physically assaulting her.

Justice Samantha Presland sentenced Wood to 14 years in prison, expressing her deep sorrow that the once innocent childhood memories had been completely twisted and destroyed.

The judge also emphasized that Wood would serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release, with an indefinite restraining order issued to prevent him from contacting his victim again for the rest of his life.

In mitigation, defense lawyer Catherine Ravenscroft revealed that Wood continues to deny any wrongdoing.

She also noted that since his remand in prison, he had attempted to take his own life.

Additionally, it was mentioned that Wood was particularly concerned about his elderly partner, who was in her 90s and for whom he was providing significant support prior to his incarceration.

As part of his sentence, Wood, of Broadway, Worcestershire, was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions.

The court's decision underscores the gravity of the crimes committed and the lasting impact on the victim, whose courage in speaking out has brought her long-overdue justice.
