MAN JAILED FOR VICIOUS ASSAULT ON PARTNER

A man caused serious injuries to his former partner by headbutting her during a trip to Blackpool.

Liam Wilkinson, aged 34 and of no fixed address, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, as well as actual bodily harm.

The incident occurred while Wilkinson and his partner were in Blackpool for a festival.

After leaving the event, an argument broke out on the way back to their accommodation, with Wilkinson’s partner expressing a desire to stay out longer instead of returning.

According to court reports, the disagreement escalated when Wilkinson seized the woman by her upper arms and headbutted her face.

She fell to the ground and curled into a ball, during which Wilkinson continued the assault by punching her face and body.

The attack resulted in the woman sustaining a broken nose and damage to her eye socket.

The second assault took place on March 16, 2022.

At the time, the same woman, the victim, had returned to her home in Oswestry with a friend after drinking.

She heard a loud bang at her door and recognized Wilkinson, who was intoxicated.

The couple were no longer together then.

Wilkinson demanded entry, but was told to leave.

He then allegedly grabbed her by the throat and repeatedly punched her in the face, hitting her several times.

A statement read aloud in court detailed how the woman continues to suffer from the effects of the Blackpool incident daily.

She described her face as shattered, with lasting emotional scars that persisted well beyond her physical recovery.

Kevin Jones, representing Wilkinson, noted that the defendant has struggled with issues related to alcohol and drugs.

Although Wilkinson had attempted to address his drinking problems, he had relapsed while waiting for sentencing, which had been delayed following his conviction on September 2 of the previous year.

Wilkinson received a prison sentence totaling five years, comprising three years and nine months for grievous bodily harm with intent, and an additional one year and three months for actual bodily harm, served consecutively.

The court also imposed a restraining order preventing Wilkinson from contacting the victim for five years.
