Kilmarnock Sexual Abuser
In June 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Liam Rae, a 21-year-old man from Kilmarnock, who has been warned that he could face a prison sentence following his involvement in grooming a 13-year-old girl through social media platforms. Rae, who is already a convicted sex offender, appeared before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to plead guilty to serious charges related to his online interactions with the young girl.
The court was informed that the offenses took place over a period stretching from September 2014 to March of the following year. During this time, Rae engaged in a series of inappropriate and sexual communications with the minor via Facebook. Despite the girl explicitly informing him of her age—only 13 at the time—Rae continued to pursue a sexual relationship through digital means.
According to the prosecutor, Rae's conversations with the girl quickly turned sexual in nature. He began requesting explicit images and videos from her, despite her clear indication of her age. The defendant reportedly told her that he loved her and implied that if she truly loved him, she would send him such images. Demonstrating persistence, the girl eventually complied and sent Rae photographs of herself, along with an explicit video. In return, Rae sent her obscene images and a video of himself, further escalating the inappropriate exchanges.
The situation escalated when the pair met in person at a concert in Glasgow, where they reportedly cuddled. Rae continued to pursue her, repeatedly asking her to return to his house and stay overnight, indicating his intent to continue the relationship beyond digital communication.
The criminal activity was uncovered when the girl’s mother, concerned about her daughter’s well-being, discovered a private message from Rae on her daughter’s social media account. Upon opening the message, she found an explicit video, which prompted her to immediately contact local police authorities. Following this discovery, the girl ceased all contact with Rae.
During the court proceedings, the judge ordered Rae to be remanded in custody until July 15, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and calling for a criminal justice social work report. The judge also warned Rae to be realistic about his situation, acknowledging the difficult position he was in. It was also noted that Rae has prior convictions for engaging in sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl and for breaching the notification requirements of the sex offenders register, highlighting a troubling pattern of behavior.
