A man attacked his former partner, who is partially-blind, before spraying him in the eye with hairspray.Liam Corcoran had been in a relationship with the victim for four years. The victim described feeling like he was ‘walking on eggshells’ daily due to Corcoran's unpredictable mood swings, stating, “Some days it was fine, others it was a complete nightmare.”On September 28 last year, the couple were outside a takeaway in Manchester city centre. The victim reported that Corcoran was angry about ruining the night and hit him in the face, but injuries were minimal. The incident was reported to police.Later, on October 6, after returning home from a night out, Corcoran began shouting at their dogs. When the victim told him to stop, Corcoran pinned him to the floor and assaulted him with punches. The victim managed to kick Corcoran in the face in self-defense. The following day, the victim discovered messages between Corcoran and his mother, in which Corcoran admitted to slashing him with an electric razor during the attack.Corcoran was arrested by police. He acknowledged attacking his partner twice and expressed remorse, claiming he was ‘mentally unstable’ at the time. He pleaded guilty to assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The victim gave a personal statement, describing how he felt abused mentally, physically, and financially over the years and said: “This was the most honest I have been able to be in the last five years. I was so afraid, I felt abused financially, physically and mentally over the years and I’m happy never to deal with him again.” However, he later retracted the statement, citing concerns about Corcoran's wellbeing.Corcoran, who has no previous convictions, was handed an 18-month community order. The court also ordered him to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity, 200 hours of unpaid work, and deducted £199 court costs from his benefits. The judge criticized his actions, stating, “Let me tell you, some of the things you have done during these episodes have been absolutely atrocious. You need to get your life together, young man. You can’t be doing this sort of thing. It’s a disgrace - you could have permanently blinded him.”Corcoran, of Mill Lane, Wythenshawe, had previously gained notoriety in 2012 for boarding a flight to Rome without a passport or boarding pass after evading multiple security checks, an incident that made national headlines.
