SUNDERLAND MAN LESLIE PARKIN CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN DISTURBING GROOMING PLOT
In December 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving Leslie Parkin, a 39-year-old man from Redhouse, Sunderland, who was caught in a sting operation conducted by the vigilant group known as Guardians Of The North. The incident centered around Parkin's attempt to groom a young boy, whom he believed to be 14 years old, with the intent of engaging in sexual activities.
Parkin's actions came to light after he engaged in online conversations with what he thought was a teenage boy.
During these exchanges, he pressured the individual to visit his residence for drinks and sexual encounters.
The conversations took a sinister turn when Parkin sent explicit images of himself and his private parts, along with a photograph of a young male engaged in a sexual act.
He also asked the supposed 'boy' for naked pictures, further demonstrating his intent.
According to reports, Parkin had set up a decoy profile on popular social and dating platforms such as Grindr and Kik in October.
The fake profile was operated by members of Guardians Of The North, who posed as a 14-year-old boy named Jake.
During the online chat, Parkin made it clear he was interested in sexual activity, offering to give Jake a bottle of lager if he came to his house.
He provided his home address and arranged to meet the boy on a Saturday morning, promising that sexual activity would take place and that he would provide alcohol.
However, Parkin's plans were thwarted when police officers, alerted by the paedophile hunters, arrived at his home instead of the young boy.
The officers confronted him, leading to his immediate arrest.
During police interviews, Parkin admitted to sending the explicit messages, believing he was communicating with a 14-year-old, and to arranging a meeting with the intent of sexual activity.
He expressed that he knew his actions were wrong but claimed he had become carried away during the conversations, which spanned over a week.
Leslie Parkin was brought before Newcastle Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to charges of attempted grooming of a child.
The court heard details of his online conduct, which included sending explicit images and making arrangements for sexual encounters.
His behaviour was described as disgraceful by the presiding judge.
In sentencing, Mrs Justice Whipple handed Parkin a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to comply with a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, register as a sex offender for ten years, and participate in a sex offender group work programme.
The court's decision reflects the serious nature of his offences and the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention to prevent future harm.
Parkin's girlfriend expressed her support for him despite his conviction and sentencing, stating she would stand by him.
Nevertheless, the court's verdict underscores the gravity of his actions and the community's concern over online grooming and child protection.
