BOURNWOUTH SEX OFFENDER LEONARD VANDERVAIL CAUGHT IN DISTURBING ONLINE PREDATION SCHEME
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bournemouth, a 43-year-old man named Leonard Vandervail was caught engaging in highly inappropriate and illegal online conversations with an undercover police officer.Vandervail, who believed he was communicating with a woman aged 22 and the mother of three children, revealed his disturbing sexual interests and made alarming confessions about his past and present predatory behavior.
It was during these covert interactions that Vandervail openly described himself as a 'genuine paedophile,' a term he used to confess his sexual attraction to children.
He went further to brag that the youngest victim he had abused was only four years old, a revelation that sent shockwaves through the courtroom and the wider community.
The police had set up the sting, with an officer posing as a woman on a dating app, and it was through this platform that Vandervail initiated contact.
Prosecutor Rod Blain outlined to Bournemouth Crown Court on March 7 that Vandervail expressed a desire to meet children, specifically mentioning that he was looking for a young girl.
After the initial messaging, the undercover officer, pretending to be the mother of three children, asked Vandervail if he wanted to meet her children.
To everyone's dismay, he responded affirmatively, indicating a disturbing willingness to engage with minors.
Following this, the conversations moved to another messaging platform where Vandervail wasted no time in asking for details about the ages of the children.
The officer disclosed that her 'daughters' and 'son' were aged 10, two, and seven.
Vandervail then admitted his sexual interest in children of those ages, explicitly stating that the youngest he had abused was four years old.
He further confessed that such activities were a regular occurrence in his life and assured the officer that he was a 'genuine paedophile.' When questioned about boundaries, Vandervail claimed he would do anything, revealing a complete disregard for the safety and innocence of children.
The conversation then took a more sinister turn as he and the officer arranged to meet her 'children,' with Vandervail providing details about his location in Bournemouth and sending a photograph of himself.
This image was subsequently used by police to identify him.
Authorities confirmed that Vandervail was not a stranger to the justice system.
Dorset Police revealed that he was already a registered sex offender and had previously been subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
Despite this, he appeared to have regressed in his behavior, as noted by his legal representatives during the trial.
Nick Robinson, defending Vandervail, argued that the comments made during the online exchanges were purely fantasy, influenced by alcohol and cannabis at the time.
He also pointed out that Vandervail had completed a sex offender treatment program eight months prior and had performed well during that process.
Robinson expressed that Vandervail was genuinely remorseful and eager to work with probation services to prevent any future offenses.
However, the court was not convinced that Vandervail's behavior was benign.
His Honour Judge Robert Pawson described his criminal history as 'very troubling,' emphasizing that his attraction to children had persisted for over a decade.
The judge sentenced Vandervail to three years in prison, imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, and ordered him to be placed on the sex offender register for life, underscoring the severity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
