SON JAILED FOR LIFE AFTER FRENZIED STABBING OF MOTHER
A man named Lee Sowerby, aged 45, was found guilty of stabbing his mother, Mary Annie Sowerby, to death in her home located in Dearham, Cumbria, on 22 January. The attack was described as "brutal and frenzied" by the court.
Sowerby used the largest kitchen knife available and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest and neck, leading to her death at the scene.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years.
The judge, Mark Brown QC, characterized Sowerby as "extremely dangerous" and remarked that "this was a brutal and frenzied attack on a victim who had no chance." The court heard that Sowerby had a history of mental health issues dating back to the 1990s, including a diagnosis of Paranoia Schizophrenia, and had been subject to mental health court orders.
Mental health deterioration was noted in 2018 as he refused medication.
Prior to the attack, Sowerby had called the ambulance himself after the stabbing.
His family described the death as "devastating" and expressed frustrations over how mental health services had handled his case.
