LEE MOULAND AND SHOCKING CHILD GROOMING IN DURHAM AND GOOLE

A man from Durham with a disturbing history of sexual misconduct was caught attempting to groom a decoy online in an appalling case that highlights the dangers of online predators.

Lee Mouland, aged 32, engaged in a calculated effort to manipulate what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, and his actions have now led to criminal charges and a significant prison sentence.

The case was brought to light after a vigilance group dedicated to combatting online abuse set up a decoy account.

This account, which masqueraded as a teenage girl, was used to lure suspects who believed they were communicating with minors.

Zhou gathered information and monitored conversations, ultimately revealing Mouland’s inappropriate intentions.

The victim, or rather the decoy, first made contact with Mouland via a fake profile between November 26 and December 6 in the year 2020.

Subsequently, Mouland switched the conversation to WhatsApp for more private communication, discussing explicit images and sexual topics.

Throughout these exchanges, Mouland was told that the girl was only 14, but he appeared unconcerned by her age or the potential legal implications.

Prosecutors outlined that Mouland’s messages quickly turned to sexual grooming, with him expressing his desire to meet in person and describing intimate acts.

He repeatedly told the decoy that she was attractive and, despite the age discrepancy, encouraged her to engage in sexual acts.

He even spoke of traveling from his home in Durham to Scotland specifically to see her.

A particularly egregious part of his misconduct involved sending a video of himself performing a sex act to the supposed minor.

During the conversation, he urged her to try the same but insisted she would enjoy it, claiming she would eventually love it and that it would be a positive experience for her.

Mouland’s predatory behavior was not limited to vulgar messages; he actively sought to encourage the girl to indulge in sexual acts, showing a clear grooming pattern aimed at exploiting a minor.

Following his arrest, police revealed that Mouland’s conduct displayed unmistakable signs of grooming behavior, emphasizing the significant age disparity.

Prosecutor Amber Hobson detailed how the case exemplified the dangers posed by online predators who exploit anonymity to approach minors.

In his defense, defense attorney Richard Butters acknowledged Mouland’s prior convictions, though none of this nature.

He emphasized that Mouland collaborated fully with law enforcement from the moment of his detention and asserted that there was no evidence of an actual meeting planned.

According to Mr.

Butters, Mouland expressed deep remorse, recognizing the gravity of his actions.

He explained that his behavior was out of character and stemmed from a difficult personal period marked by extreme stress, the recent death of his father, a troubled relationship, and heavy cannabis use.

Mouland was described as being isolated and in a vulnerable state at the time.

During sentencing, Judge John Thackray QC underscored the seriousness of the offenses, noting that although no actual child was involved since the decoy was fake, Mouland believed he was communicating with a minor.

The judge stated that Mouland’s use of grooming techniques and his decision to send a sexual video made the crimes particularly grave.

The judge highlighted that Mouland's age and the nature of his actions warranted a custodial sentence.

As a result, Mouland was sentenced to eight months in prison.

Additionally, he was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same period.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from exploitation.

Mouland's conviction sends a clear message about the dangers of online grooming and the severe consequences faced by those who engage in such predatory behavior, especially in regions like Durham and surrounding areas engaged in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
