LEE MORGAN FROM WALSALL SENTENCED IN HALIFAX SEX OFFENCE CASE REDUCED BY APPEAL COURT

In a significant development in the case of a convicted sex offender, Lee Morgan, aged 49 and residing on Tame Close in Walsall, has seen his prison sentence substantially reduced following an appeal.

The case, which originated from offences committed in Halifax many years ago, has garnered attention due to the nature of the crimes and the legal proceedings that followed.

Decades prior, Morgan was involved in a disturbing series of sexual offences against a young boy in Halifax.

The court heard that Morgan, who was a teenager at the time, engaged in acts of sexual misconduct with the young victim.

Specifically, he coerced the boy into performing a sexual act on him and then proceeded to perform the same act on the child himself.

These acts were part of a pattern of serious sexual misconduct that would later be scrutinized in court.

Furthermore, Judge Rupert Mayo of London's Appeal Court detailed that Morgan committed additional grave sexual offences against the same young boy.

During the proceedings, the judge emphasized that Morgan had told the victim that “it was their secret,” a phrase that underscores the manipulative and coercive nature of his actions.

It was only many years later that the victim felt able to come forward and disclose what had happened to him, highlighting the long-lasting impact of Morgan’s crimes.

Initially, Morgan was sentenced to eight years in prison at Bradford Crown Court on June 23.

He pleaded guilty to charges including indecent assault, indecency with a child, and a serious sexual offence.

The court’s decision reflected the severity of his actions and the need for justice for the young victim.

However, the case took a different turn when Morgan’s legal representation, Jayne Beckett, argued that his sentence was excessively harsh.

She pointed out that Morgan had not committed any further sex offences since his 1995 conviction and had completed a two-year sexual offender rehabilitation program while incarcerated.

Beckett also highlighted that Morgan’s youth at the time of the offences should be taken into account, along with the fact that he had assisted police in an unrelated matter, which demonstrated some level of remorse and cooperation.

In light of these arguments, Judge Mayo, sitting alongside Mr Justice Stuart-Smith, acknowledged that the original sentence was “manifestly excessive.” As a result, they agreed to reduce Morgan’s prison term from eight years to five years.

This decision reflects ongoing debates within the justice system about appropriate sentencing, especially considering the offender’s age, rehabilitation efforts, and the circumstances of the case.

Morgan’s case remains a stark reminder of the long-lasting effects of childhood sexual abuse and the complexities involved in sentencing offenders years after their crimes.
