LEE BOWDLER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND COLWICK
A man from Nottinghamshire who engaged in heinous acts of illegal surveillance and child exploitation has been formally sentenced in connection with his disturbing activities.Lee Bowdler, aged 52 and residing in Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire, was found guilty of secretly filming two children while they were in a bathroom and for possessing a substantial collection of indecent images of children.
His criminal behavior also extended to sharing some of these images on social media platforms.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) uncovered Bowdler’s involvement after he posted illicit images on Twitter under an anonymous online account.
Authorities quickly identified him and launched an investigation that culminated in his arrest during regular working hours in Colwick in May 2022.
During the raid, officers seized multiple electronic devices—eight in total—that contained a startling total of 271 indecent images of children.
Some of these images were classified within the most severe category, highlighting their extreme disturbing nature.
Among the most disturbing evidence recovered was a covertly recorded video showing two children taking a bath, shot secretly by a hidden camera installed in the bathroom.
Such footage underscores the malicious intent and premeditation involved in Bowdler’s conduct.
His actions inflicted profound harm, both through the visual evidence of abuse and the ongoing proliferation of such material, which fuels a global demand that the NCA remains committed to combat.
The case was brought before Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on 7 February.
Bowdler admitted to multiple counts, including three of making indecent images of children, one of distributing such images, and another of voyeurism.
His plea marked a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims and society at large.
On Tuesday at Nottingham Crown Court, Bowdler received a custodial sentence of one year.
Additionally, the court imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order to restrict his access to any material or situations that could facilitate further abuse or exploitation.
Adam Sprague, an operations manager with the NCA, issued a statement emphasizing the severity of Bowdler’s crimes.
“Lee Bowdler clearly had a sexual interest in children, evidenced both by the footage he secretly filmed and the extensive collection of child abuse images he accumulated,” Sprague explained.
“There is a global demand for such material, and our relentless efforts aim to shield children worldwide from sexual abuse while ensuring perpetrators are held accountable.” The NSPCC also commented on the case, noting that, in the East Midlands region alone, reports of child abuse image offenses have surged by 81% over the past five years.
Their spokesperson remarked, “Behind every image Bowdler downloaded and shared are children who have suffered abuse, often with lifelong effects.
We must continue to work tirelessly to protect vulnerable children and bring offenders to justice.”
