RUGBY MAN LEE BARNWELL SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN WARWICK
In a case that has shocked the community of Rugby, Lee Barnwell, a 48-year-old resident of Dunchurch Road, was handed a substantial prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple serious charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.The investigation, which culminated in his arrest in April 2019, revealed a disturbing pattern of online activity involving the exploitation of very young children and infants.
Police officers executed a search warrant at Barnwell’s home following intelligence reports about his internet usage.
During the raid, authorities seized several electronic devices, including a laptop, a Kindle Fire tablet, two mobile phones, and two USB sticks.
These devices were subjected to detailed forensic analysis by high-tech investigators, uncovering a horrifying collection of images.
The files included 156 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe form of indecency, along with 147 Category B images and a staggering 3,535 Category C images, which are considered less severe but still illegal.
Further investigation revealed that Barnwell had been communicating with another individual via a chat application.
Under the pseudonym 'Leo,' he exchanged messages with someone known as 'Kingdice.' The conversations included the sharing of explicit images depicting children, some of whom were newborns and very young babies, highlighting the disturbing nature of his online activities.
In addition to the images, police found that Barnwell had conducted internet searches using terms such as ‘sex with kids’ and ‘photos of nude children,’ indicating a premeditated interest in child exploitation.
Notably, in 2014, he had also searched for childcare jobs, although there was no evidence to suggest he was involved in any legitimate childcare work.
The investigation also uncovered files on his laptop containing images of young boys accompanied by grossly indecent text, further emphasizing the severity of his offenses.
Despite being released on bail, Barnwell’s online activity did not cease.
In June of the following year, authorities received intelligence suggesting he had been uploading additional images of children.
This led to his re-arrest in August, during which officers recovered a second Kindle Fire and a mobile phone, both containing a total of 142 indecent images across all categories, which he had downloaded since his initial arrest.
The police also discovered that Barnwell had been actively involved in distributing these images, exchanging a total of 3,851 files with two other individuals over a two-month period prior to his second arrest.
Adding to the disturbing nature of the case, police found a bag containing children’s underwear at Barnwell’s residence, raising further concerns about his intentions and activities.
Throughout the investigation, Barnwell, who had no previous convictions, was interviewed three times but refused to cooperate, replying only with ‘no comment’ to all questions posed by authorities.
At Warwick Crown Court, Judge Anthony Potter addressed Barnwell directly, stating, “I have to sentence you for 11 offences that you committed over the course of about two years, all of which involved the possession or distribution of sexualized images of children, some of them no more than babies.
People like you give life to the abuse of children because if you didn’t view or distribute these images, others would not do that for your gratification.
You bear a heavy responsibility for the sexual abuse of children.” The judge emphasized that Barnwell’s offending should have ended with his initial arrest in April 2019, when six devices were seized.
Instead, he continued to search for more images and even looked for jobs involving childcare, which indicated a disturbing interest in children beyond mere image viewing.
The court sentenced Barnwell to three years and four months in prison and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to society.
