LAWRENCE STRINGER AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN MANCHESTER
A homeless man named Lawrence Stringer has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after committing a shocking sexual offence in Manchester.Stringer’s actions involved a vulnerable teenage girl who was heavily intoxicated at the time, an incident that left her severely traumatised and suffering emotional distress.
The severity of her trauma was evidenced when she attempted to take her own life by overdosing on paracetamol the day following the assault.
According to court reports, Stringer, aged 50, managed to evade justice immediately after the offence, prompting police to issue a warrant for his arrest.
He was eventually located two months later in Surrey after he had fled from Manchester to the South Coast.
His departure from the area came after he was formally charged with the sexual activity involving the underage girl.
Once captured, he was brought back to Manchester to face trial.
The court proceedings detailed that on August 15 of the previous year, Stringer lured a teenage girl—who had learning difficulties—back to his makeshift tent, which was situated near a canal towpath on the outskirts of Hyde.
It was revealed that earlier that evening, the girl had been drinking with friends in the town centre following a dispute with her family.
During her impaired state, Stringer, who was loitering nearby, learned that she was unwilling to return home and, knowing her intoxicated condition, invited her to accompany him to his tent.
The incident took a darker turn after the girl managed to escape from Stringer.
She then sought refuge outdoors and slept rough outside a B&Q store.
The following morning, overwhelmed by her trauma, she took a significant quantity of paracetamol, which prompted her to be rushed to hospital.
During her treatment, she disclosed to medical staff what had transpired, which became crucial evidence in the investigation.
Authorities identified Stringer through a DNA match and located his tent in the bushes where he had been hiding.
Upon his arrest on September 3, a search of his campsite uncovered disturbing materials, including a scrapbook filled with torn magazine pictures of young teenage girls aged around 13 or 14.
The police also found evidence of his previous convictions, notably for unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl.
The victim continues to suffer from nightmares related to the assault, a point highlighted during the court case.
Solicitor Neil Usher, defending Stringer, argued that although his client had a prior conviction for a similar offence, he did not habitually engage in such conduct and maintained that he had not raped the victim.
However, the judge dismissed these claims, emphasizing the gravity of the offence.
In delivering sentence, Judge Anthony Hammond issued a stern warning to Stringer.
He stated, “Force or otherwise, you had no business having sexual intercourse with a girl of that age, and that is the moral and legal situation.” The judge pointed out the particular vulnerability of the victim, noting her learning difficulties and personality issues, which Stringer exploited.
Furthermore, Judge Hammond ordered Stringer to register as a sex offender for life and emphasized the importance of compliance with successive police updates about his whereabouts after his release.
He warned that failure to adhere to these conditions would result in severe penalties, including a longer prison sentence.
This case underlines ongoing concerns about the safety of vulnerable minors and highlights issues related to bail-jumping.
