Carlisle Rapist
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Carlisle, Lawrence Bowe, a 62-year-old dairy worker residing on Petteril Street, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving three young girls. The gravity of his crimes and the subsequent legal proceedings have highlighted the severity of his actions and the ongoing efforts to ensure justice is served.

Back in November 2004, Bowe was sentenced to four years in prison after a jury at Carlisle’s Crown Court found him guilty of a series of serious charges. These included 12 counts of indecent assault, one count of attempted rape, and one count of causing actual bodily harm. The victims, whose ages ranged from 11 to 16, endured repeated abuse over a period spanning several years. The court heard that Bowe’s actions were particularly egregious, with the jury learning that after the first assault, one girl confided in her mother about what had happened. However, her mother dismissed the incident, attributing it to Bowe’s intoxication, which unfortunately allowed him to continue abusing her daughter three more times, as well as targeting two other girls.

During the trial, the court was informed that Bowe’s crimes dated back to the late 1970s and early 1980s. One of his victims, who was between 13 and 14 years old at the time, was assaulted three times and was also attempted to be raped. Another girl, aged between 11 and 16, was subjected to five indecent assaults and was physically harmed during the abuse. The third girl, only 11 years old at the time, was assaulted four times in the year prior to the trial. Bowe’s actions were characterized by a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned decades.

In addition to his prison sentence, the judge ordered Bowe to register as a sex offender with the police for the rest of his life. He was also prohibited from working with children in any capacity, reflecting the court’s recognition of the ongoing risk he posed. Bowe, who has lived with his wife Maureen on Petteril Street for 25 years, showed no visible emotion as he was led away to begin serving his sentence.

However, the story did not end there. The Attorney General’s office, represented by Lord Goldsmith QC, appealed the original sentence, arguing that it was unduly lenient given the gravity of Bowe’s crimes. Yesterday, the Criminal Appeal Court in London agreed with this assessment and decided to increase Bowe’s jail term to seven years. This decision effectively doubled the length of his imprisonment, underscoring the judiciary’s stance on the seriousness of sexual offenses against minors and the importance of appropriate sentencing to serve justice and protect the community.
