LALITKUMAR NIRMAL AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN LONDON
A former medical professional has been sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison after being found guilty of subjecting a young girl to horrific sexual abuse that spanned over ten years.Lalitkumar Nirmal, aged 79, committed these heinous acts against a girl who was under the age of 14 during the time of the abuse, which occurred at various locations within the United Kingdom.
The investigation revealed that the abuse took place in multiple areas, including Croydon and Sydenham in East London, as well as Cwmbran in Wales.
At the time these offences occurred, Nirmal was practicing as a general practitioner (GP) in Cwmbran, a town in south Wales.
Despite the victim not being a patient of his, she was known to Nirmal personally, which indicates the breach of trust and position of authority he held.
The victim, whose identity cannot be disclosed due to legal restrictions, suffered immensely from Nirmal's predatory conduct.
Nirmal admitted to eight counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14 and four counts of gross indecency with a girl under the age of 14.
Additionally, he was convicted of a single count of indecent assault against another young girl who was known to him.
The court heard that Nirmal's pattern of abuse was systematic and sustained over many years, causing severe emotional and physical trauma to his victims.
Anjie Bowen, a Senior Crown Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, commented on the case, stating: "Lalitbhai Nirmal carried out a sustained campaign of sexual abuse, whilst hiding behind a veneer of respectability as a doctor and trusted local GP.
His victims have been left deeply scarred, suffering from profound impacts that have lasted a lifetime.
His actions were predatory and utterly despicable." One particular victim endured Nirmal’s abuse for a decade, experiencing its harms throughout a significant portion of her childhood.
The allegations came to light when reports were first made to the police in October 2019.
Subsequently, in August 2020, Nirmal was questioned under caution, and by May 2021, he was formally charged with the offences.
Nirmal was registered as a GP with the General Medical Council from 1972 until 1995, during which time he held a position of considerable trust within the community.
Detective Sergeant Mark Morris from South East BCU CID expressed gratitude towards the victims for their bravery in coming forward.
He remarked: "I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the victims who have shown remarkable courage in recounting their trauma.
The physical and mental toll of this prolonged abuse is difficult to imagine, and I hope today’s sentence will bring some measure of closure and peace." While Nirmal's medical practice was based in Wales, notably the Torfaen area in the 1980s, the police emphasized the importance of trusting the community and being vigilant against abuse of authority.
The victims involved were not his patients, but authorities are concerned that Nirmal may have exploited his role as a healthcare professional and trusted community figure to commit these crimes.
As a result, police have called on anyone with relevant information to contact them on 101.
All inquiries will be handled with strict confidentiality and by a dedicated team experienced in dealing with such sensitive cases.
Nirmal, who resides at Malham Close, Friern Barnet in north London, denied the charges but was ultimately convicted of the sexual abuse after a trial.
His sentencing underlines the gravity of his offenses and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation and harm.
