CARE WORKER JAILED FOR ELDERLY ABUSE
Kyle Smallwood, aged 24 and residing on Clandon Avenue in Tunstall, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for abusing elderly residents with dementia at Bradwell Hall Nursing Home located in Newcastle-under-Lyme.He pleaded guilty to four charges of deliberately neglecting or mistreating residents spanning from April 2010 to April 2011, as heard at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
The police described the incidents as ‘extremely distressing,’ with specific acts including flicking food onto a resident’s face, forcibly placing a woman in her nineties onto a bed, splashing cold water over a stroke-affected elderly man, and intentionally frightening residents as they moved through the corridors.
Detective Constable Mark Burslem commented, ‘The severity of these incidents was deeply upsetting, especially given that they involved some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community.
This case emphasizes that such behavior by caregivers will not be tolerated or excused.’ Bradwell Hall Nursing Home, a private facility with some funding from Staffordshire County Council, has not issued any statement regarding the case.
Liz Staples, the council’s adult wellbeing director, noted that gathering sufficient evidence in residential care investigations can be complex, but authorities were ‘entirely confident’ in pursuing legal proceedings, which resulted in this conviction.
