BASINGSTOKE MAN RECEIVES LIFE SENTENCE FOR ATTEMPTED DOMESTIC MURDER
May 2023: Kyle Butler, a resident of Basingstoke, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of attempting to murder his ex-partner.The incident occurred on June 24, 2022, when police responded to a distress call at an address in Butler Close.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Butler, 29 years old, was spotted holding a knife against his ex-partner's neck and threatening to cut her throat, with their two young children in the same room.
At the scene, Butler had barricaded house entrances with furniture and toys, and had set a blanket and mattress on fire, setting off a smoke alarm.
Police officers forced their way inside, disarmed Butler, and rescued the woman and children.
The woman sustained serious cuts to her hand and three stab wounds to her shoulder, while a police officer also suffered hand injuries.
The woman’s children and five police officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
It was later uncovered that in the days preceding the attack, Butler had searched Google for “sentencing for manslaughter.” He admitted to arson with recklessness as to whether life was at risk and to wounding with intent but denied attempting to murder.
In her victim impact statement, the woman described how her daily life has been heavily impacted, revealing ongoing issues with anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks, and sleep and mobility problems.
She also expressed heartbreak over her children’s suffering, stating, “It’s heartbreaking for two little children who should have been protected by their daddy.
The scars on the outside may heal, but the emotional scars will stay forever.” After a jury trial, Butler was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum non-removable term of 19 years.
The police authorities and legal system praised the bravery displayed by officers and the resilience of the woman, reaffirming their commitment to combat domestic violence and aid victims.
Detective Constable Chelsea Adamson remarked that “This was a shocking incident that has had a significant impact on the woman involved,” and she acknowledged her courage.
Chief Inspector Gillian Cox spoke about the professionalism of the responding officers who risked their lives to protect others.
Officials encourage victims to come forward to report domestic abuse and provide information on available support services.
