PONTYPOOL MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING GIRLFRIEND DURING DRUNKEN ROW
A man from Pontypool, Kyle Bird, aged 38, was convicted of strangling his girlfriend during a drunken altercation following her suspicions that he was in contact with three other women, including his ex-partner.
The incident, which resulted in bruises on her neck, occurred at their shared house in Cwmbran on Monday, January 6.
Despite denying assault and claiming the bruising were love bites and self-inflicted scratches, Bird was found guilty of strangulation following a trial.
Prosecutor Roger Griffiths highlighted Bird’s 11 previous convictions for 25 offences, noting he had been sentenced in 2015 to a community order and restraining order for battery.
Bird, of Park Road, Penygarn, was sentenced to 22 months in prison, with half to be served before being released on licence.
The court also imposed a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and required him to pay a statutory victim surcharge.
The judge remarked that Bird's defense was rejected by the jury, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense committed at his residence in Cwmbran.
