KRISTIAN WOODS/LLOYD BUTLER FROM PORTSMOUTH JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND OFFENCES

In June 2018, a man known as Kristian Woods, formerly Lloyd Butler, was sentenced to a 20-month prison term at Portsmouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to possessing indecent images of children.

The charges stemmed from discoveries made between September 2012 and April 2017, when authorities found child abuse images stored on his computer.

Woods, aged 28 and residing on Billy Lawn Avenue in Havant, also admitted to failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements in September 2017, specifically for not informing police of a change of address within the mandated timeframe.

The investigation revealed that the illicit images had been located on a computer at a friend’s residence, which was subsequently reported to law enforcement agencies.

During the court proceedings, Woods’s defense lawyer, Daniel Reilly, highlighted that Woods had previously served a 38-month prison sentence for similar offenses, which resulted in his release in 2016.

Reilly explained that Woods had changed his name from Lloyd Butler to Kristian Woods in an effort to start anew within the community, but unfortunately, this attempt was undermined by public hostility.

Reilly detailed that Woods had become a target of harassment, with threats made against him on the streets and a Facebook campaign that culminated in a mob gathering outside his residence, demanding he come out.

Police had to intervene to prevent further escalation.

The defense also emphasized the emotional toll the previous incarceration had taken on Woods, stating that he now suffers from anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Jane Rowley expressed a stern view of Woods’s actions.

She criticized his attitude, noting that Woods perceives himself as a victim and shows limited remorse, making excuses for his behavior.

The judge pointed out that Woods had issued threats, including statements like “kill anyone who gets in my way” and describing himself as a “ticking time bomb,” which marked him as a high risk of reoffending.

Addressing Woods directly, she stated, “You see yourself as a victim and take limited responsibility for your actions and make unjustified excuses.

You are a danger to the public and children, so only a custodial sentence is appropriate.” Earlier in May 2018, Woods, then residing on North End Avenue in Portsmouth, had admitted to possessing three categories of child abuse images between September 2012 and April 2017.

He also acknowledged failing to notify authorities of his new address within three days of moving, as required by law.

Prosecutor James Kellam pointed out that Woods was aware of the images, having physically moved the hard drive containing them.

The case was adjourned to June 1 for sentencing, with Judge William Ashworth indicating that Woods was likely to face immediate custody, although probation services might consider alternative options.

Back in December 2014, Lloyd Butler, then 24 and living in Stamshaw, Portsmouth, was convicted after being caught with child abuse images.

The discovery occurred when a friend, searching for deleted photographs on a laptop provided by Butler, uncovered evidence of his possession.

The police found 24 films and 1,461 pictures of child abuse on the device.

Butler pleaded guilty to downloading and distributing these images and was sentenced to three years and two months in prison.

Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutor Daniel Sawyer highlighted that Butler had an addiction to viewing such images and had taken it further by distributing them, with the images being classified as among the most serious.

Butler also pleaded guilty to producing cannabis with intent to supply, receiving a concurrent two-month sentence.
