BRAYBROOKE MAN SENTENCED TO 20 MONTHS FOR ASSAULT ON WOMAN IN ROTHWELL
A man from Braybrooke received a 20-month prison sentence after he committed a severe assault on a woman following the end of their relationship.The incident occurred in a Rothwell pub in May 2021, where Kieran Smith, aged 33 and living on Desborough Road, assaulted the woman by repeatedly punching her, resulting in significant facial injuries including a broken nose.
Initially, Smith was taken into custody and released on bail while police continued their investigations.
He then fled Northamptonshire, prompting authorities to issue wanted appeals for his arrest.
His case was featured on BBC’s Crimewatch Live, which eventually led to information that placed him in Blackpool, Lancashire.
He was re-arrested in Blackpool during summer 2023.
After his apprehension, Smith faced a charge under Section 20 for causing grievous bodily harm without intent.
He pleaded guilty to this charge in March of the previous year but later did not contest the court's ruling, resulting in additional charges.
At Northampton Crown Court, he received a sentence of 20 months in prison, along with a three-year restraining order forbidding him from contacting his former partner by any means.
Detective Constable David Bastuba commended the victim's bravery and the police’s dedicated pursuit of justice, stating: “I want to express my gratitude to the victim who had the courage to report what Smith did to her and supported the investigation despite his efforts to evade justice.” He also noted that Smith’s attempt to flee outside the area did not impede law enforcement’s efforts, and that the conviction offers closure and reassurance for the victim.
The prison sentence is intended to deliver justice and prevent Smith from causing further harm or contacting her again.
