KIERAN HUELIN FROM BOLTON CAUGHT ON CAMERA ABUSING HIS PET DOG ROSIE
In a disturbing incident that has shocked the local community in Bolton, Kieran Huelin, a resident of Felton Walk, was caught on camera engaging in acts of cruelty towards his pet dog, Rosie. The footage, which was later reviewed by the RSPCA, shows Huelin, born on August 26, 1983, and aged 36 at the time, physically and verbally abusing his Staffordshire bull terrier in his own flat.In the video, Huelin is seen walking around his residence while Rosie, a brindle and white dog, sits quietly on an armchair. The recording captures a series of distressing moments where Huelin waves his finger aggressively in her face, then proceeds to slap her once. Rosie, visibly affected, gets off the chair and follows him, only to be ushered back onto the furniture by Huelin. Throughout the clip, Huelin raises his fist and points his finger at Rosie, threatening to strike her multiple times. The footage also shows him slapping her down twice more, with his movements appearing unsteady and at times stumbling backward, indicating possible intoxication or imbalance.
Following the discovery of the video and the details of the incident's location, the RSPCA launched an investigation. Inspector Danni Jennings visited Huelin’s flat on June 14, 2019, after recognizing him from the footage. During her visit, she confirmed that the address matched the location in the video, and Rosie was present at the scene. Recognizing the signs of distress and the potential for ongoing harm, Huelin voluntarily signed Rosie over into RSPCA care while the investigation continued.
In her official statement, Inspector Jennings described Rosie as being in good physical condition, friendly, and playful, although she exhibited submissive behavior, likely as a response to the abuse. Jennings emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, stating, “Dog owners should always make sure their pets are handled properly and not stressed or endangered with any aggressive or anti-social behaviour. Training should always be reward-based and should not include physical punishment as this may cause pain, suffering, and distress.” She further noted that Rosie, who is normally lively and bouncy, appeared quite the opposite in the footage, indicating the impact of the abuse.
As a result of the investigation, Huelin was prosecuted and received a sentence that included a 12-month community order, which incorporates an alcohol treatment order. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £800 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge. Importantly, Huelin was also banned from keeping any animals for a period of five years, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the need to protect vulnerable animals in the future.
The case has garnered attention from local news outlets such as Bolton News and the Manchester Evening News, highlighting the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of cruelty. Rosie is now under the care of the RSPCA and will soon be available for adoption, offering her a chance at a happier, stress-free life away from her previous environment.
