KIERAN DOCHERTY FROM FIFE ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES
In a case that has shocked the community in Fife, Kieran Docherty, a 62-year-old man with a history of public service, was found to be in possession of a significant collection of indecent images of children, yet he avoided imprisonment during his recent court appearance.Docherty, who previously served as a Justice of the Peace in Fife for approximately two years before stepping down citing health issues, was arrested following a police raid on his residence in July of the previous year.
The police investigation uncovered over a hundred disturbing images depicting young boys aged between two and 14, some of which involved explicit sexual acts, including penetrative contact with adults.
Despite the gravity of the evidence, Docherty pleaded guilty to charges related to the possession and creation of indecent photographs of children.
The court was informed that the images included 21 at the most severe Category A level, which signifies the most serious form of child exploitation material.
The images portrayed children in various stages of sexual abuse, some engaged in acts involving adults, and the children’s ages ranged from as young as two to 14 years old.
During the proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, it was revealed that Docherty was a registered counsellor who advertised his services at a rate of £40 per hour, specializing in trauma, sexual abuse, and sexual issues.
A source familiar with the case noted that Docherty had been working in this capacity for about two years before he resigned, citing health reasons.
The revelation of his arrest and subsequent court appearance was described as a shock to those who knew him in his professional and community roles.
The police investigation detailed that Docherty and his wife were both detained on suspicion of downloading the illicit images.
The authorities traced the images back to their residence, where they were questioned separately.
Docherty was asked about the electronic devices at his home, which included a PC, a Mac, and an iPad.
A preliminary examination of these devices uncovered 20 indecent images, and further analysis revealed a total of 101 images, with 70 being unique.
Docherty reportedly told officers, “If there’s any pornography it will be mine,” when questioned about the images.
He made no further comment when asked about the possession of the indecent material.
The investigation confirmed that the images depicted children involved in sexual acts, some with adults, and the children’s ages ranged from two to 14.
In light of the evidence, Docherty was charged and pleaded guilty to the offences.
The court heard that he had been a registered counsellor, providing therapy for trauma and sexual issues, but his professional reputation was now overshadowed by the allegations.
Despite the serious nature of the crimes, Docherty was not sentenced to jail.
Instead, he was placed on the sex offenders register and received a community punishment of 180 hours of unpaid work.
The court emphasized his status as a first-time offender and deferred sentencing until the following month, pending the preparation of social work reports.
Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC expressed her intention to consider all relevant factors before finalizing the sentence, highlighting that Docherty’s prior clean record was a mitigating factor in the case.
