KEVIN WOOD FROM METHILHILL CAUGHT IN DISTURBING ONLINE PAEDOPHILE PLOT IN FALKIRK
A man identified as Kevin Wood, aged 43 and residing in Methilhill, has been implicated in a disturbing online incident involving an attempt to engage in inappropriate communication with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The incident was uncovered by members of an online paedophile hunting group, who monitored the conversation and reported it to authorities.According to court proceedings at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, the incident took place over a series of messages exchanged on Facebook. On the evening of June 27, 2024, at approximately 8 pm, Wood initiated contact by sending a simple greeting, “hi,” to a profile that he believed belonged to a young girl. The profile was created by an adult woman working with the Child Online Safety Team, who was acting in an undercover capacity to catch potential offenders.
The woman, posing as a 14-year-old girl named Ruby from Liverpool, responded to Wood’s message. She introduced herself and disclosed her age, prompting Wood to acknowledge her youth and explicitly state that she was “too young” for any further interaction. Despite this, the conversation continued, with Wood suggesting that she should be talking to boys her own age and discussing her virginity, which indicated a disturbing level of predatory intent.
Ms. Stevenson, the fiscal depute, detailed the conversation, noting that the woman expressed uncertainty about sexual matters, to which Wood responded with dismissive comments. He stated, “I’ll leave it there,” when the girl indicated she was inexperienced. The woman then mentioned that Wood claimed he was seeking love and that if she were older, she could find a boyfriend in Scotland. He also expressed regret that she was not of age.
The conversation took a more explicit turn later on. The fiscal explained that Wood asked the woman, “bet you haven’t seen a c**k before? Is that something you want?” and made obscene remarks about her private parts. He further emphasized the confidentiality of their exchange by saying, “This is just between us.”
The woman reported the conversation to the police, which led to Wood’s arrest and subsequent charges. During the court hearing, his solicitor, Dewar Spence, argued that Wood’s initial message was sent in error and that he repeatedly attempted to end the conversation. Spence explained that Wood believed he was communicating with someone he had contacted previously and that he was intoxicated at the time, which contributed to his failure to cease the interaction.
Spence also highlighted that Wood made multiple efforts—approximately 17 times—to terminate the conversation, but was met with responses that insisted they were “just chatting.” He suggested that Wood’s actions were driven by the attention he was receiving and not malicious intent. The solicitor further stated that the incident has had severe personal consequences for Wood, including the breakdown of his marriage and potential social repercussions, such as abuse on social media platforms.
Kevin Wood has admitted to attempting to communicate indecently with a child between June 27 and June 30 of this year. The court has deferred sentencing to allow for reports to be prepared. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and online safety organizations to combat online predatory behavior and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
