KEVIN STEVENS FROM HALIFAX SENTENCED AFTER PREDATORY PLOT IN YORKSHIRE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Halifax, Kevin Stevens, a 58-year-old man, was handed a significant prison sentence after attempting to engage in a sexual encounter with a girl he believed was just 13 years old.

The incident unfolded in September 2015, when Stevens arranged to meet a young girl named Lizzie at an Asda supermarket in Dalton, a town in South Yorkshire.

Unbeknownst to him, the girl was a decoy created by vigilant paedophile hunters aiming to catch predators online.

On Monday, Sheffield magistrates sentenced Stevens to 26 weeks behind bars after he pleaded guilty to attempting to facilitate a sexual act with a minor during an earlier hearing.

In addition to his imprisonment, Stevens was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next seven years, placed under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order until further notice, and fined with a victim surcharge of £115.

The court heard that Stevens had actively sought out contact with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl through a Facebook group he thought was used by paedophiles to target young girls.

Prosecutor Mr.

John Kavanagh explained that Stevens began communicating with Lizzie in August 2015, and he was cautious at first, maintaining daily contact.

Lizzie disclosed her age early in their conversations, which made it clear to Stevens that he was dealing with a minor.

Despite this, Stevens persisted and eventually asked Lizzie to meet him, suggesting they go for a drive and see what happened afterward.

The confrontation took place in the car park of the Asda store, where two adults, posing as teenagers, confronted him.

During the exchange, Stevens claimed, “I have never done this before,” when questioned about his intentions.

When asked if he had previously spoken to young girls, he admitted to having done so, stating he preferred “to get on better with young girls.” Authorities seized Stevens’ computers during their investigation but found that he had deleted all communications with “Lizzie.” No indecent images or evidence of contact with children were discovered on his devices.

Defense lawyer Mr.

Mike Jones highlighted that Stevens had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and emphasized that there was no evidence of hostility, drug or alcohol abuse, threats, or grooming in the case.

He argued that the age gap was significant but that the incident lacked premeditation or planning.

However, the magistrates were not convinced by Stevens’ defense.

They pointed out that he had deleted information from his computer, which they considered indicative of grooming behavior.

The court also noted the substantial age difference and Stevens’ apparent lack of remorse as aggravating factors.

Stevens was subsequently sentenced to serve 13 weeks in prison, with the remainder of his sentence to be served on license, marking a stern warning to potential offenders in the region.
