KEVIN SMITH SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SERIES OF SEXUAL ATTACKS IN E16
A man responsible for a series of horrific sexual assaults over several years has been sentenced to prison following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.Kevin Smith, aged 55 (born 23 May 1966), of Edwin Street, E16, was handed an 18-year sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, 23 November.
He had previously pleaded guilty at the same court to 18 counts of rape and assault by penetration.
Smith, who also went by the alias 'Ian Dormer,' will serve an additional six years on licence upon release.
His offending spanned from January 2016 to July 2021.
The victim, described as a vulnerable woman, disclosed her experiences to mental health services staff, who then alerted police shortly afterward.
He was arrested on Saturday, 24 July, and was remanded in custody the following day.
The North East Safeguarding Team conducted a rapid and detailed investigation.
During their inquiry, officers seized Smith's phone, which revealed a disturbing history of searches related to rape and other sexual offences, as well as inquiries into the legality of such acts.
A thorough search of Smith's address was also carried out, during which officers discovered he had made plans to flee before police arrived.
He had removed furniture such as the sofa, bed, and wardrobe, seemingly to give the impression that he was no longer living there, and had packed his remaining belongings into boxes.
On his phone, police found evidence that he had researched locations within the UK where he might disappear and how he could dispose of his phone to avoid detection.
Detective Constable India Allen commented: 'This was a harrowing investigation involving a female victim who suffered terribly at the hands of Smith, who used a position of trust to abuse her.
Her support during our investigation and the judicial process has been crucial.
I would like to thank and praise her for the outstanding courage and bravery she has shown.
I hope Smith's substantial sentence will give her some small measure of comfort as she looks to the next chapters of her life, safe in the knowledge that Smith is behind bars.'
