MANCHESTER FATHER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR HOUSE FIRE MANSLAUGHTER
Kevin Hargreaves, aged 38, was found guilty of manslaughter for igniting a house fire that claimed the lives of his son John, age 8, and his stepchildren Jordan, 14, and Carly, 19, in Openshaw, Manchester. The incident occurred after he poured petrol over himself and set the house ablaze following a dispute with his wife, Susan Owen, which happened after a day of drinking and a heated argument.
During the trial, Hargreaves explained to the jury that he felt overwhelmed with life, stating, "I had had enough of life." He was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter because the court concluded his primary intent was to commit suicide, rather than to kill others.
Mr Justice Holroyde described the cause of the fire as stemming from "selfishness and self-indulgence," highlighting that the act was deliberate rather than impulsive.
Witnesses described the scene as horrific, with children trapped inside calling for help.
Hargreaves also has a history of violence, including a 2007 assault on his wife, and has an IQ of 74, which is considered below average.
He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Follow-up details reveal the tragic impact of his actions and the court’s recognition of his mental state and personal history.
