May 2023 Man sentenced to 10 years for multiple sex offences A man in his 70s has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for multiple sexual offences dating back more than 50 years. Kevin Britton, aged 71 and of North Pickenham, Swaffham appeared at Norwich Crown Court today (Thursday 4 May 2023) after pleading not guilty to 13 sexual offences. The offences included nine counts of indecent assault on a man aged 16 or over, three counts of indecent assault on a girl aged under 14 and attempted rape of a man aged 16 or over. Following a three-week trial, he was convicted of all 13 counts by a unanimous jury. He has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for life. The incidents involved three victims and occurred between 1971 and 2004. Britton abused a position of trust inflicting multiple planned assaults which took place over a significant length of time. This led to prolonged suffering for his victims, resulting in psychological harm. Victim impact statements, read aloud in court, detailed the effects Britton has had on their lives. One victim commented, ‘It’s taken me 25 years to speak, 25 years to work out who I am. Years of emotional distress, unable to process, understand or manage my own emotions.’ Another victim stated, ‘I have peace in knowing that I was believed, and that Kevin can’t go on to abuse anyone again. I hope this case allows other victims to be able to have a voice and show that you don’t have to suffer in silence.’ Sentencing Kevin Britton today (Thursday 4 May 2023) at Norwich Crown Court, his Honour Judge Anthony Bate commented that Britton had executed a ‘campaign of sexual abuse against young people since the 1970s’.
