PERVERT WHO SUBJECTED TWO YOUNG GIRLS TO 'VILE' ABUSE JAILED FOR 13 YEARS
Justice has finally been served for two women who suffered abuse at the hands of Kenneth Runciman, a man who secretly engaged in child sexual offenses decades ago.Underneath his outward appearance of respectability, Runciman’s past actions remained hidden until now, causing lasting trauma for his victims.
The 66-year-old was convicted of 13 criminal charges and is now incarcerated.
During the sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court, accounts from both women revealed the profound and lasting harm his abuse inflicted.
One victim explained how she suppressed her memories by pushing them aside both during and after the abuse, describing feeling ashamed and believing the abuse was her fault.
She recounted trying to maintain a normal life at school, wishing she could have the same happiness as her peers without the fear of further abuse.
The other survivor described feeling courageous and justified, expressing relief that she no longer bears the burden of guilt.
Runciman, previously residing in Ayton, Berwickshire, was convicted on 11 counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency with a child.
He received a 13-year prison sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Judge Tim Gittins stated that Runciman’s crimes were “sickening” and accused him of attempting to tarnish the victims’ credibility claiming one had ulterior motives and that the other was lying, assertions that the jury rejected.
The judge highlighted the strength and resilience of the victims, acknowledging they have been vindicated after enduring years of abuse while Runciman seemingly moved on with his life and reputation.
Describing his behaviour as “vile,” Judge Gittins praised the impact of the victims’ powerful statements, which have demonstrated how Runciman damaged their childhoods.
While they are now survivors rather than victims, the judge emphasised that no punishment can compensate for lost innocence.
Brian Mark, defending, said Runciman continues to deny the offences.
