KENNETH PYBUS AND SHOCKING GROOMING IN DURHAM
A man previously imprisoned for sex offences has been reimprisoned after a disturbing incident involving children in County Durham.Kenneth Pybus, aged 75, was subject to strict legal restrictions preventing him from having unsupervised contact with minors, as a result of a conviction made in 2019 for engaging in child sexual offences.
The events leading to his rearrest were detailed in Durham Crown Court, where it was revealed that Pybus had initially been sentenced to five years in prison by Norwich Crown Court in November 2019 for his criminal activities.
After serving his sentence, he was released on licence in February 2022.
Following his release, he relocated to Sacriston, where he remained under police surveillance.
Despite the restrictions imposed on him, the court heard that Pybus began initiating contact with local children, engaging them in conversations and offering sweets and dog treats as a means of establishing what authorities described as manipulative relationships.
This behavior was observed and reported to the police, raising immediate concerns about the potential risk he posed to minors in the community.
Once law enforcement authorities identified these breaches of his legal restrictions, Pybus was swiftly arrested and taken back into custody.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order, a legal measure put in place to prevent individuals with such histories from re-offending or initiating contact with children.
For his violations, Pybus was sentenced to an additional 14 months in prison.
During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Edward Legard described Pybus’ behavior as “classic grooming techniques,” emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing threat to vulnerable young individuals.
This case highlights ongoing concerns over repeat offenders and the effectiveness of monitoring systems in safeguarding children in communities such as Sacriston and the broader County Durham area.
