KENNETH MCMURRAY SENT TO PRISON FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN BELFAST
In a case that has shocked the community of Belfast, Kenneth McMurray, a 36-year-old man from Silvio Street, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a 13-year-old girl. The incident, which took place over a span of several days in March 2010, involved a disturbing series of events that unfolded after McMurray met the young girl through online interactions.
Judge Gemma Loughran presided over the case at Belfast Crown Court and expressed her clear disapproval of McMurray's actions.
She stated that she was “singularly unimpressed” with his repeated claims that the girl had led him on by sending flirtatious messages.
The judge emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable young people, especially teenagers who may not fully understand the risks or who might deliberately place themselves in dangerous situations.
She underscored that it is the responsibility of adults to refrain from responding to such advances, highlighting the duty of the justice system to safeguard minors.
The court heard that McMurray, a married father of two, initially made contact with the girl via the internet around Christmas 2008.
He persistently asked for her mobile number, doing so on a daily basis, which led to a series of exchanges through text messages.
Prosecuting QC David Hunter detailed that a large volume of these messages was exchanged, many of which contained explicit content.
McMurray sent what the girl described as “dirty texts” and even professed his love for her, persuading her to send a photograph of herself.
Further into the investigation, it was revealed that McMurray had picked the girl up from her school on a couple of occasions.
However, no inappropriate activity was reported during these encounters until March 24, 2010.
On that day, McMurray took the girl back to his house, where he provided her with two large bottles of alcopop.
It was at this point that he engaged in sexual activity with her in his marital bed.
After the incident, McMurray warned the girl not to tell anyone, claiming that if his wife found out, she would call the police.
Despite this warning, the girl confided in her mother, which led to McMurray’s arrest.
Following his arrest, McMurray pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child, relating to unlawful sexual acts committed between March 20 and March 26 of the previous year.
The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offenses and the need to protect minors from predatory behavior, especially when such conduct involves manipulation and abuse of trust.
