KENNETH LYONS JAILED FOR ABUSING GIRL IN YORK AND SELBY TRUCK CAB
In February 1998, a tragic case unfolded involving a truck driver who was convicted of repeatedly abusing a young girl within his lorry, leading to a prison sentence of two years.Kenneth Peter Lyons, aged 46, appeared at York Crown Court where he faced serious allegations.
During the proceedings, Lyons chose to conceal his face in the dock as prosecutor Tim Stead detailed the nature of his offenses against the young girl.
The emotional weight of the case was evident as Lyons eventually broke down in court.
Prosecutor Tim Stead explained that the child's father had permitted her to accompany Lyons on trips in his truck, which provided the setting for the abuse.
Lyons was found to have indecently assaulted the girl multiple times, both inside and outside the cab of his lorry.
The court heard that these assaults spanned a period of six months, during which Lyons engaged in various forms of inappropriate conduct.
Despite Lyons's initial denial, claiming that the girl was lying during a police interview, he did admit that she might have seen him expose himself, adding a disturbing dimension to the case.
Judge Arthur Myerson QC emphasized the importance of protecting children from such violations of trust.
He stated that children are entitled to safety and innocence, and that Lyons had egregiously betrayed that trust through his actions.
Lyons, who resides on Volta Street in Selby, had previously admitted to six counts of indecent assault against the girl in 1997.
A seventh charge was left on file, as Lyons pleaded not guilty to that particular allegation.
Following his conviction, the judge ordered that Lyons undergo enhanced supervision upon release from prison.
He was also advised to participate in a sex offender treatment program.
Additionally, Lyons was mandated to register his address with the police for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his whereabouts.
The court's decision reflected the gravity of the offenses and the need for continued vigilance to prevent further harm.
Simon Lund, representing Lyons, acknowledged his client’s acceptance of responsibility, stating that Lyons recognized his disgraceful behavior.
Lund described Lyons as a hard-working and responsible man prior to these events, but noted that he had lost his good name and the respect of those close to him due to his actions.
