KENNETH DIVERS SENTENCED IN RENFREWSHIRE FOR DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE AGAINST YOUNG BOYS

UPDATE 08/02/2025: Kenneth Divers, 80, has died in custody.

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Renfrewshire, Kenneth Divers, a 78-year-old man, has been formally sentenced to five years in prison for committing serious sexual offences against children over a span of more than two decades.

The conviction was handed down at Paisley Sheriff Court on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, following a detailed trial that uncovered disturbing details about Divers' predatory behaviour.

Earlier in May 2023, Divers was convicted of multiple charges related to sexual abuse that took place in the Paisley area between 1968 and 1992.

The court proceedings revealed that Divers, who was known to his victims as Kenny or KD, targeted young boys during his time as a teacher and football coach at two local schools St Aelred’s Secondary and St Andrews Academy.

These crimes spanned over a period of more than twenty years, with the victims ranging in age from as young as 10 to as old as 16 at the time of their abuse.

The court heard that Divers, who also scouted for Celtic Football Club in the Paisley and District area during the 1980s and 1990s, used his position of trust to exploit vulnerable boys.

The victims, four men who bravely came forward to testify, described how Divers would often shower them with gifts such as football boots and Celtic kits, creating a false sense of friendship and trust.

These gestures, according to the prosecution, were part of a grooming process designed to manipulate and control the young boys.

Depute fiscal Dana Barclay, in her closing argument, described Divers’ conduct as “predatory, opportunistic, and sexually abusive,” emphasizing that he took advantage of boys’ passion for football and their trust in him.

She highlighted the courage of the victims, who provided compelling and overwhelming evidence despite the shame and embarrassment they endured for years.

Barclay pointed out that Divers showed no remorse and continued to deny his involvement, even as the evidence mounted against him.

The jury, composed of eight men and seven women, ultimately found Divers guilty of five charges involving four different victims.

The offences included instances where Divers targeted boys aged between 11 and 13 at locations in Dunoon and Hampden Park between August 1, 1968, and June 9, 1970.

Another victim, aged between 12 and 16, was abused at properties in Paisley and Largs from August 1, 1971, to May 31, 1975.

A third boy, aged 10 to 14, was victimized at St Aelred’s between August 1, 1984, and August 31, 1988, while a fourth victim, aged between 12 and 16, was targeted at St Andrews Academy from August 1, 1991, to December 31, 1992.

Following the verdict, Sheriff Brian Mohan deferred sentencing to allow for the preparation of reports.

When he finally sentenced Divers, he emphasized the gravity of the crimes, noting that Divers had committed these offences over a period of more than two decades while occupying trusted roles as a teacher and football coach.

The sheriff described Divers’ actions as a gross breach of trust and highlighted the devastating impact on the victims, many of whom now are adults carrying the emotional scars of their abuse.

In his sentencing remarks, Sheriff Mohan stated that Divers’s conduct was indicative of grooming behaviour, and he expressed concern over Divers’s apparent indifference during the trial.

The sheriff pointed out that Divers took only 20 minutes to dismiss the allegations as fabrications, despite the detailed victim impact statements that revealed the profound psychological harm inflicted upon the victims.

The sheriff also noted that Divers’s attempts to deny involvement and his lack of remorse demonstrated a troubling attitude towards his crimes.

One of the victims, now residing in England, summed up the community’s view by stating, “The many good things Kenneth Divers has done in his life will now rightly be expunged from the memory of most.

His enduring legacy will be that of a powerful man who knowingly took advantage of those who trusted, believed, and even liked him, manipulating them into a pretence that what he was doing to them was for their benefit.” Given the severity of the offences, the breach of trust, and the long-lasting harm caused to multiple victims, the court determined that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate course of action.

Divers’s bail had been revoked on October 14, 2022, and he has remained in custody since that date.

The sheriff concluded that the maximum sentence permissible in the sheriff court five years was justified in this case, and this sentence was backdated to October 14, 2022.

Additionally, Divers will be subject to the Sexual Offender Notification Requirements for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his status as a registered sex offender.
