KENNETH BRIGHT SENTENCED IN EDINBURGH FOR MULTIPLE SEX CRIMES INVOLVING VULNERABLE VICTIMS
A predatory sex offender who raped two young women and a 14-year-old girl has been sentenced to seven years in prison.Kenneth Bright, 35, carried out his crimes at flats in Johnstone, Paisley, and Glasgow, targeting vulnerable victims who were under the influence and unable to consent.
During a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Tyre told Bright: "Each, for their own reasons, was a vulnerable individual in need of help." Bright had denied multiple charges during an earlier trial but was convicted of raping all three victims.
The first assault occurred at a flat in the Bellahouston area of Glasgow on February 25, 2014, where Bright raped and sexually assaulted a woman while she was asleep and intoxicated, and again after she awoke.
In September 2019, he subjected a second woman, also asleep and under the influence, to rape at a flat in Johnstone.
His third victim was a 14-year-old girl, who was raped and subjected to a sexual act after falling asleep at a flat in Paisley in February 2020; she was also under the influence.
Defence solicitor advocate Paul Mullen stated that Bright maintained the same position he took during the trial but acknowledged that he faced a "lengthy sentence" following the jury’s guilty verdicts.
Lord Tyre highlighted that, although these were Bright’s first convictions for sex offences, he has a lengthy history of previous offending.
The court was also told that Bright was assessed as posing a medium risk of re-offending sexually.
Expressing concern about Bright’s lack of understanding regarding the impact of his actions on victims, Lord Tyre emphasized the seriousness of the crimes.
In addition to the prison term, Bright will be subject to supervision and monitoring for three more years.
He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
Police Scotland welcomed the sentencing, noting the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.
