MANCHESTER WOMAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER DRUNKEN CHILD CRUELTY
A woman has admitted to child cruelty after a baby was found with bruises, unconscious, and described as looking like a porcelain doll.Kelly Nelis, who was intoxicated at the time, accepted full responsibility for what occurred.
The court heard that her conduct had caused others to leave a property in east Manchester where she had been consuming vodka and Fanta.
Witnesses saw Nelis, clearly under the influence, going upstairs while holding the baby and shouting at it.
Her actions led to a disorderly scene, including smashing a television and shouting out phrases such as "I can't deal with this anymore," "shut up," "I can't cope," "die," "f*** off," and "I've had enough." The infant was eventually discovered face down and unresponsive, with a porcelain-like appearance.
Emergency personnel arrived quickly, managed to revive the child, and took it to hospital, where it spent time in intensive care.
The baby showed signs of facial bruising and brain fluid presence, but made a complete recovery.
Despite the lack of direct evidence tying Nelis to the injuries, she admitted to mistreating the child improperly.
She received a two-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to child cruelty, with the condition to serve 35 days of rehabilitation.
The presiding judge noted her intoxication at the time and emphasized that her sentence was handed down narrowly to prevent immediate imprisonment.
