SUNDERLAND NURSE KEITH WILLIAMS CONVICTED OF SEX OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN FROM THE 1990S

In a case that has shocked the community of Sunderland, Keith Williams, a former mental health nurse, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of multiple historic sex offences committed more than two decades ago.

The allegations against Williams, who was once employed at Monkwearmouth Hospital in Sunderland, involved three male victims who were children at the time of the abuse.

Williams, now aged 56, steadfastly denied all accusations, claiming that the allegations were nothing more than the 'figments of their imaginations.' Despite his protests, a jury at Newcastle Crown Court convicted him after a detailed trial that lasted over a week.

One of the victims, who was only nine years old when the abuse occurred and has since grown into an adult, delivered a poignant victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing.

He expressed feelings of devastation and vulnerability, stating, 'I am lost, I want someone to help me but I don’t know who can.

I don’t know what life holds for me, I want it to be different.

I had hoped if he got convicted I would feel better, I don’t feel any different.

I feel very vulnerable every day of my life.' His words underscored the lasting trauma inflicted by Williams’s actions.

Judge John Evans, presiding over the case, emphasized the lifelong consequences Williams faces.

He ordered Williams to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, comply with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, and prohibited him from working with children in any capacity.

The judge remarked, 'Having been arrested and interviewed, you flatly denied the allegations, claiming they were figments of the boys’ imaginations.

The jury, by their verdict, rejected your denials of these offences.

Damage has undoubtedly been done in each case, although it is difficult to quantify.' Throughout the trial, testimonies from friends and supporters painted a picture of Williams as a man of good character.

Judge Evans acknowledged this, stating, 'You have been a community psychiatric nurse for a considerable period.

Witnesses testified to your integrity and the high regard in which you were held by colleagues, patients, and carers.' Williams’s defense attorney, Robert Adams, highlighted his client’s positive reputation, describing him as a man of 'positive good character.' The court was informed that the sexual misconduct took place in the 1990s and was not connected to Williams’s employment at Monkwearmouth Hospital.

The three victims testified during the trial, asserting that Williams’s accusations of fabrication were false.

Following the verdict, Williams, of Close Street, Millfield, was convicted on nine counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child concerning the three victims.

He was acquitted of eight other charges of indecent assault related to the same individuals.

Prosecutor Julian Smith outlined the case to the jury, emphasizing that the abuse occurred over 20 years ago and involved a persistent pattern of sexual misconduct.

Williams maintained his innocence throughout, asserting that the allegations were fabricated.

Statements from former colleagues and friends, read during the trial, described Williams as someone capable of putting others at ease and being highly regarded within the healthcare community.

A spokesperson from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that Williams had resigned from his position in April of the same year and clarified that the charges were unrelated to his employment, with no patients at risk.

The Trust emphasized that Williams was suspended immediately once the allegations surfaced.

In a related statement, a father from Sunderland, whose child was among the victims, condemned Williams as a 'twisted sexual predator' and expressed relief that he was now off the streets.

The father stated, 'He has put my family through hell.

I’m just grateful this twisted sexual predator has been removed from the streets.

He is a menace; an actor, someone with no conscience and without guilt for the consequences of his actions.' The case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding against abuse, even from trusted professionals.
