YORK PAEDOPHILE KEITH RYMAN SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR ABUSING THREE GIRLS
In October 2018, a disturbing case unfolded at York Crown Court, where Keith Ryman, a 75-year-old man from York, was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against three young girls. The court heard that Ryman had inflicted abuse on the victims over a span of several years, with the youngest being just three years old at the time of the initial assault.
Ryman’s crimes spanned across two generations within an extended family, and his actions had a profound and lasting impact on the victims.
The jury was informed that the girls only decided to speak out after the youngest girl, who was three at the time of her abuse, saw Ryman with a three-year-old child and became frightened that he might be doing to her what he had done in the past.
This moment of fear prompted the victims to finally come forward and reveal the extent of the abuse they had endured.
During the trial, Judge Simon Hickey addressed Ryman directly, condemning his manipulative tactics.
The judge stated, “You took the opportunity to inveigle yourself into the trust of the family and you were able to use your power as an adult in order to say at times to the victims ‘you won’t be believed and I will be believed’.” The court also heard that Ryman had used blackmail to silence one of the victims, threatening to abuse her sister if she disclosed the abuse, an act described as “insidious” by the judge.
When the victims finally decided to speak out, Ryman forced them to relive their trauma by making them give evidence against him in court.
The jury found Ryman guilty of multiple charges, including 10 counts of indecent assault, four counts of sexual assault, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Ryman, who resided on Carnot Street, off Leeman Road in York, denied all the allegations, although the jury acquitted him of two additional charges of sexual assault.
As part of his sentence, Ryman was handed a 16-year prison term, which will effectively keep him behind bars for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, he will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, subject to a sexual harm prevention order, and will be under a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting any of the victims.
Victims of Ryman’s crimes provided personal statements that revealed the deep scars left by his actions.
One victim shared that her experiences led her to turn to alcohol and drugs before she even reached 14 years old, and she began smoking at the age of 12.
Another victim described how the abuse had negatively impacted her school performance and her ability to trust men.
All victims expressed the difficulty they faced in talking about what had happened to them, highlighting the long-lasting emotional and psychological effects of Ryman’s abuse.
