Leyton Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leyton, Keith Romig, a 55-year-old resident of Liverpool Road, was sentenced to just three years in prison for serious crimes involving child abuse and the possession of extensive child pornography materials. The sentencing took place at the Old Bailey, where the court heard details of Romig’s heinous activities that spanned over two decades.

Romig’s criminal conduct was uncovered during a police investigation into a paedophile ring operating under the guise of a seemingly innocent fan club. The group, known as the Hazel Ascot Appreciation Society, was purportedly dedicated to celebrating a star comparable to Shirley Temple. However, authorities revealed that the society was a front for a depraved network involved in the creation, exchange, and possession of thousands of obscene images and videos depicting children.

Officers from Scotland Yard’s Paedophile Unit executed a raid on Romig’s residence, seizing approximately 30,000 items, including films, videos, photographs, and other materials. Many of these items featured members of the ring themselves, highlighting the extent of their involvement and the disturbing nature of their activities. Romig was identified as the “storeman” of the operation and was confirmed to be an active participant in the abuse.

During the court proceedings, Romig admitted to conspiring to distribute these illicit images from January 1978 through October 2000. He also confessed to the indecent assault of a young girl aged between five and seven, as well as taking an indecent photograph of her. The court heard that Romig’s actions were part of a broader pattern of abuse, which included molesting a young girl and engaging in indecent acts.

Two other individuals involved in the ring received sentences as well. Trevor Mellis, an 80-year-old former dentist and vice-president of the society, was handed a two-year suspended sentence. Meanwhile, Romig’s accomplices, identified as Baldwin, aged 51, and Julian Levene, aged 58, were ordered to register as sex offenders for life. The court emphasized the gravity of their crimes, condemning the actions as selfish conduct that causes untold misery and lifelong trauma to victims.

Despite the severity of the crimes, Romig’s relatively short sentence of three years has been met with outrage by law enforcement officials, particularly officers from Scotland Yard’s Paedophile Unit, who expressed their frustration at what they considered a lenient punishment. The officers refused to comment publicly but made their displeasure clear.

Judge David Paget, presiding over the case, delivered a stern judgment, stating: “No right-thinking person can fail to be both outraged and appalled by sexual abuse of young children. The harm it does is incalculable and the real tragedy is that the lives of the victims are blighted forever so they are unlikely to be able to form normal sexual relationships when they grow up.” The judge further condemned the conduct as selfish and destructive, emphasizing the profound impact on the victims’ lives.
