KEITH RITCHIE FROM HARTLEPOOL RE-IMPRISONED IN TEESSIDE FOR BREACHING SEX OFFENDER CONDITIONS

In March 2018, Keith Ritchie, a known sex offender from Hartlepool, was returned to prison to serve the remainder of his 12-year sentence after authorities uncovered violations of his court-mandated conditions.

The case unfolded at Teesside Crown Court, where a meticulous investigation revealed that Ritchie had contravened the terms of his release, prompting his re-incarceration.

Ritchie, aged 42, had previously served part of his sentence after being convicted at Warwick Crown Court in 2011.

Following his release, he moved to Teesside, but was still under strict supervision as a registered sex offender.

His release was subject to a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) and other conditions requiring him to notify police of any changes to his personal details, including his name and address.

These measures are designed to monitor and prevent further offending, ensuring public safety.

During a court hearing held at Teesside Crown Court, Judge Stephen Ashurst emphasized that police had conducted routine checks on Ritchie, as required by law.

It was during these checks that authorities discovered Ritchie had been using a false name, which constituted a breach of his notification obligations.

The judge described the discovery as the result of “a good piece of detective work,” highlighting the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts in monitoring sex offenders.

Further investigations revealed that Ritchie had engaged in communication with a young girl through social media and letter correspondence.

While the exchanges were not explicitly threatening, Ritchie claimed his intentions were benign.

Nonetheless, the judge made it clear that Ritchie's actions were in direct violation of the SOPO, which explicitly prohibits contact with minors without prior approval.

The fact that Ritchie had adopted a false name, effectively an alias, compounded his breaches of the notification requirements.

Addressing Ritchie directly, Judge Ashurst stated, “The fact remains you must have known that contacting her was in direct breach of the SOPO.

And the fact you had adopted a false name as effectively an alias put you in breach of your notification requirements.” The court concluded that due to his contact attempts and breaches, Ritchie was to be recalled to serve the remaining period of his sentence.

The judge made it clear that any new sentence would commence immediately, from the day of the hearing.

Ritchie, who resides on West View Road in Hartlepool, appeared via video link from Durham Prison to face the court.

He admitted to three breaches of the SOPO and failure to comply with notification requirements during October and November of the previous year.

Given his early guilty pleas and the relatively short period over which the offences occurred, Judge Ashurst sentenced him to one year in prison.

In his sentencing remarks, the judge issued a stern warning, stating, “You should take the sentence today as a very severe warning about the dangers of breaching a SOPO.

It’s at the end of the day put in there not only for the protection of the children concerned but also to protect you in future.

You’d be well advised to stick to the terms of the order.” Finally, Judge Ashurst noted that Ritchie's eventual release from the current incarceration would be determined by the Parole Board, depending on his conduct and compliance with the conditions set forth during his supervision period.
