SOUTH SHIELDS SEX OFFENDER KEITH GIBB JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ATTACKS IN NEWCASTLE CROWN COURT
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of South Shields, Keith Gibb, a 68-year-old man, was sentenced to prison for a series of heinous sexual assaults committed against a young boy.The incidents took place during the late 1990s, when the victim was between the ages of 13 and 15, leaving a lasting scar on the teenager's life.
Newcastle Crown Court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which has had a profound and potentially lifelong impact on the victim.
Prosecutor James Adkin emphasized the severity of the trauma, stating, "The offending has had a significant and potentially life-long effect on him." The court was told that Gibb, who resides on Whitehall Street in South Shields, had admitted to seven charges of indecent assault, acknowledging his guilt in the matter.
Judge John Evans delivered the verdict, sentencing Gibb to four years in prison.
In his remarks, the judge acknowledged the defendant's guilty pleas, noting that they spared the victim from having to relive the ordeal publicly.
However, he also highlighted the devastating effect the abuse has had on the young man, stating, "It is clear, looking at the impact statement, this has had a significant impact upon him.
He plainly feels his life has, in many ways, been utterly ruined by the abuse he suffered at your hands." While Gibb was described as being of good character and having a history of diligent work, the judge made it clear that these factors could not mitigate the seriousness of his crimes.
As part of his sentence, Gibb was also banned from working with children in the future and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Defence lawyer Gavin Doig expressed concern about the impact of the prison sentence on Gibb, noting that there has been some progress in his understanding of the gravity of his actions.
He stated, "There has been some progress in his understanding of the impact of his offending," suggesting that the defendant is beginning to grasp the severity of his misconduct, though this did not influence the court's decision to impose a custodial sentence.
