PARENTS SENTENCED FOR DEATH OF ONE-MONTH-OLD BABY

A father from Leicester has received a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years following his conviction for the murder of his five-week-old son.

The mother involved was also sentenced for her role in allowing the child's death.

Ollie Driver passed away in his cot during the night of October 20-21, 2017, due to a delayed consequence of a fractured neck caused several days prior.

Forensic examinations revealed that Ollie had endured numerous injuries, including 40 fractured bones and damage to his brain.

Medical specialists agreed that these injuries could only have resulted from physical abuse.

Investigative evidence, including witness testimonies and accounts from the parents about the last days of Ollie’s life, pointed to the conclusion that only his parents, Michael Davis and Kayleigh Driver, could have inflicted such injuries.

Prosecutors argued that Davis was responsible for the injuries, especially the fatal assault.

They described his growing impatience with Ollie’s needs and the ongoing physical abuse directed at the baby.

Instead of caring for his son, Davis reportedly spent significant time playing video games and only working during the day.

This behavior was linked to his increased propensity for violence toward Ollie.

Kayleigh Driver was aware of the abuse but chose not to take reasonable steps to protect her child.

After a trial lasting ten weeks at Leicester Crown Court, Davis was found guilty of Ollie’s murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Driver was convicted of causing or permitting the child’s death and suffering serious physical harm.

On Wednesday, April 10, Davis received a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years, while Driver was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Andrew Baxter, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor from the CPS, stated: “Ollie’s father ended his life, with his mother failing to intervene.

Instead of nurturing their vulnerable baby, the parents subjected him to repeated abuse until the fatal injury occurred.

Kayleigh Driver chose inaction.

The final days of Ollie’s short, tragic life were filled with pain and suffering.

Both parents lied multiple times about what happened, leaving the jury to decide the truth of their actions.

Ollie’s death at such a young age has deeply shocked his extended family, and our thoughts are with them.” Case Building and Evidence Medical experts confirmed that Ollie had accumulated a series of injuries inflicted over multiple occasions.

While neither parent took responsibility, both denied wrongdoing.

Cases like this pose particular legal challenges, requiring the prosecution to present clear evidence of each defendant’s involvement.

They faced charges of murder, with an alternative charge of causing or allowing the child’s death, allowing the jury to hold either responsible even without directly causing fatal injuries.

A key injury was a broken rib, inflicted shortly before his death, which the prosecution attributed solely to Davis.

Evidence suggested the injury was not accidental or caused during CPR.

The defendants provided conflicting accounts during police interviews, which the prosecution argued demonstrated dishonesty.

Additional evidence about their behaviors and actions helped clarify the timeline of events in Ollie’s final days.

Davis reportedly stayed awake overnight playing video games while working by day, which the prosecution argued made him unable to properly care for Ollie and contributed to violent outbursts.

When Ollie was discovered injured, Davis claimed he tried to perform CPR for 15 minutes before calling emergency services—an act perceived as evidence of guilt.

Driver said she was asleep when Davis cared for Ollie and had no knowledge of the abuse.

The prosecution maintained that it was impossible for her to have been unaware of the injuries and distress Ollie suffered.

As the trial progressed, the jury was presented with a clearer picture: Davis was responsible for causing the injuries through assault, while Driver's passive stance and failure to act contributed to Ollie’s death.

Both parents' actions and inactions were scrutinized in determining their respective roles in this tragic case.
