LEICESTER MAN JAILED AFTER KILLING WIFE AND JUMPING OFF CLIFF
A man named Kaushik Solanki, who was battling depression, was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for manslaughter after killing his wife, Manisha, in Leicester on 14 April 2021.The court was informed that their marriage, which lasted 25 years and was initially happy, began to fall apart in 2016 and became particularly harmful during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
It was explained that Solanki, now aged 55 and using a wheelchair due to injuries sustained during the incident, had originally been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, as he was suffering from major depressive disorder at the time of the crime.
Evidence presented to the court detailed the violent nature of the attack, involving Beating his wife to death with a shortened hockey stick, leading to at least eleven significant blunt force trauma wounds on her scalp.
Her fingers broke as she tried defending herself, and ultimately, Solanki sawed off her head, decapitating her.
After the murder, he attempted to commit suicide by leaping from a cliff at Hunstanton in Norfolk, landing on jagged rocks that caused multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury.
He was found alive and received treatment for his injuries, with doctors confirming no long-term brain damage.
The judge described his survival as miraculous and praised police efforts throughout the investigation.
During the court hearing, his two sons presented victim personal statements, describing their efforts to support their father after the loss of their mother and providing insight into their family's struggles amid the pandemic restrictions.
They spoke of their mother as a caring woman who supported students with special needs, and their father as a committed worker for Leicester City Council.
The case also involved references to domestic violence, with police reports indicating incidents between 2018 and 2020, including covert recordings that captured the wife shouting and hitting her husband.
The defense highlighted that Solanki suppressed his emotions until he 'lost control,' and the stressful conditions of the pandemic contributed to the difficulties within the family.
