ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE: LANARKSHIRE WOMAN RECEIVES THREE-YEAR BAN
Kathryn Brady, aged 35, from a farm in Lesmahagow, was found guilty of animal cruelty after admitting to neglecting 19 ponies and donkeys. The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) criticized the three-year equine ban imposed as a sentence, believing a lifetime ban on keeping animals would have been more suitable for such a heinous case.
Brady faced two charges of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to get veterinary care and one charge of abandonment, with the prosecution highlighting her failure to provide proper care for her animals.
The court in Hamilton sentenced her to the three-year ban and also ordered her to complete 170 hours of community service.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity described this case as 'horrendous', and Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn detailed the suffering of one donkey in particular: 'One young female donkey was collapsed and in an advanced state of suffering.
Her head collar was so tight that it was growing into her head, cutting into the flesh around her nose and behind her ears and penetrating to the bone in two areas.
There were also maggots feeding off the dead tissue.' Flynn emphasized that it would have taken weeks for the donkey's collar to become embedded, and there was 'no doubt' she suffered considerable pain and distress during her ordeal.
