HARTLEPOOL TAKEAWAY OWNER KASHMIR NANAN FACES JAIL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEEN GIRL
In a serious criminal case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool, a local takeaway owner named Kashmir Nanan, aged 52, is now facing the possibility of imprisonment after being convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.The incident took place at Shearers, a well-known eatery located on Merlin Way in Hartlepool, and the court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the assault.
According to court reports, Nanan had engaged the young girl in a conversation that quickly turned inappropriate.
He reportedly offered her vodka, which she consumed, and then proceeded to inappropriately touch her over her clothing.
The girl, who was visibly distressed, immediately reported the incident within two hours of the assault.
She confided in a friend and her family, describing her ordeal in detail, which prompted her to contact the police promptly.
During the three-day trial at Teesside Crown Court, a jury deliberated and ultimately found Nanan guilty of sexual assault by a narrow majority of 10 to 2.
The court heard that the victim was so upset that she was hysterical when she made her complaint.
Her testimony was supported by a video interview in which she recounted how Nanan initially engaged her in sexual talk before touching her in a sexual manner.
In his defense, Nanan claimed that the girl was a fantasist and that she had fabricated the entire story.
He also accused her of stealing his vodka and drinking it, as well as stealing £20 from him.
Despite his claims, the jury found sufficient evidence to convict him of the charges.
Following the verdict, Nanan was remanded in custody while a pre-sentence report was prepared.
The court scheduled his sentencing for May 21.
Judge Stephen Ashurst, speaking through a Punjabi-speaking interpreter, warned Nanan that the likely outcome would be an immediate custodial sentence.
The judge also ordered Nanan to sign the Sex Offender’s Register, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the impact on the victim.
Nanan resides on Seaton Lane in Hartlepool, and this case has brought to light the disturbing nature of the assault and the importance of justice for victims of sexual crimes in the community.
