KARL NEWSON AND SHOCKING RAPE IN NORTHUMBERLAND
A woman who was subjected to a brutal sexual assault has courageously shared the profound and lasting effects that the attack has had on her life.The victim, whose identity remains protected by law, opened up about the emotional and psychological toll inflicted by Karl Paul Newson, a man from Northumberland, whose heinous actions have left her deeply scarred.
It took her an entire year to summon the strength to disclose what had happened to her.
Her account reveals the immense difficulty she faced in coming forward, highlighting the trauma and fear that often accompany such crimes.
Her bravery in finally speaking out led to Newson's arrest and subsequent conviction.
Karl Newson, aged 27, was found guilty of rape by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.
Following the verdict, he was sentenced to more than eight years in prison.
In addition to his imprisonment, Newson was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a Restraining Order, both designed to protect the victim and prevent further harm.
The victim described how her life has been significantly altered since the assault.
She explained, “I was getting in trouble as a result of what he did.
It’s ruined a big part of my life.
I don’t go out, all my curtains are always closed and I don’t answer the door.” Her words underscore the profound impact such crimes can have on a person’s daily existence and mental health.
Her journey to justice was not straightforward.
It was only after a year that she confided in her mother, which marked a turning point in her path to recovery.
She recounted, “I waited a while then reported it.
Me and my mam were having a chat and it just came out.
I just told her, it was a relief and I went to the police the next day.
It did help massively.” Newson, who resides on Morven Terrace in Ashington, denied the charges, forcing the victim to endure a trial to establish the truth.
The court proceedings culminated in his conviction, bringing some measure of justice for the survivor.
Detective Constable John Harland of Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department led the investigation.
He praised the victim’s bravery and emphasized the importance of speaking out against such crimes.
Harland stated, “Firstly, and most importantly, I’d like to offer my thanks to the victim for her bravery and courage throughout the entirety of this case.
Coming forward, having to re-live those experiences and contribute as part of a trial and court proceedings was not easy, however her bravery and desire for justice ultimately won.
I want to thank her for her dignity and her compassion for others and wholeheartedly hope that this sentence gives her a sense of peace.
This case shows that it is never too late to speak up and that justice is possible, no matter how much time has passed.
